Things I liked:

The Beeman P17 is an excellent value for someone interested in a 4.5 mm (.177 cal) target air pistol. Before you buy, think about what it is that you intend to use an airgun for. If you wish to shoot 10 meter air pistol targets and stay in the black at very low cost, this pistol is definitely worth three times what it is sold for. If you want rapidly to make many tiny dents in a barn door from 5 meters or otherwise blast away promiscuously, then skip the P17 and buy the CO2 BB gun which will do that job for you. If you want to hunt, skip pistols and go to a pellet rifle with enough power and accuracy to allow you reliably to achieve first round kills; then make yourself some rat, rabbit or pigeon stew, or at least supplement your cat's diet with your take. Is this an Olympic 10 meter target pistol? No, but it is surprisingly accurate for 10% of the cost of a basic match target pistol such as the Baikal 46. It has good balance, points very naturally and has a splendidly light trigger and servicable open sights. The P17 is a Beeman-licensed Chinese manufactured copy of the Beeman P3/Weihrauch HW40 manufactured in Germany. Except for the post and vee sights (very satisfactory for target shooting, the rear being adjustable for both elevation and windage,) it follows the P3/HW40 design very faithfully for less than 20% of the cost. I have found that Beeman model 1235 7.7 grain coated wadcutters work very well for target shooting in my P17, and are very economical.

Things I would have changed:

Loading seems awkward at first, but will soon become easier, especially if you start with pointed pellets, then switch to wads when you are used to the loading. Beeman Model 1239 8.5 grain coated pointed pellets will serve that purpose. With these products, you can find out whether you enjoy the sport without having to spend serious money on it. While the design is very good, the level of quality assurance in assembly seems, from the sample of user reviews I have read elsewhere, sometimes to fall below that standard. Most are assembled well, but some are less well assembled. While the manufacturer should improve quality control, the P17 is warranted for a year, and is not difficult to work on when the warranty has expired. There is plenty of help for diagnosing and fixing problems on the Web. After about 2,000 rounds, I started to have trouble with pressure loss. Since the pistol was then still under warranty, I spent $12 on sending it to Beeman for repairs. After a month, it came back in good order. Now that it is out of warranty, I work on it myself. A Google search for P17 overhaul led me to a number of useful sources of information, including Derrick's overhaul part 1 and finale, which are step by step guides with very good color photo illustrations (Thank you, Derrick.)

What others should know:

Cocking this device is too difficult for a child, but within the abilities of most mid-late teens and adults. Anyway, it is not a toy and is not suitable for children. The safe handling considerations for firearms apply to pellet guns.

The top of the receiver incorporates dove tail grooves between the front and rear iron sights for mounting accessory sights. Some offers of P17s bundle them with an open style red dot sight.

If you are, or think that you may be, interested in target shooting, then the P17 is worth your consideration. If you do not enter formal competition, it may be all that you need. In any event, it is a fine pistol for developing pistol marksmanship and maintaining proficiency economically and at home, rather than driving to a firearms range and firing ball ammunition frequently. I know of no other target as good for so llittle money.

Things I liked:

The only thing I liked was that it fired.

Things I would have changed:

The rear sight screw fell off and could not be screwed back in. The pistol just didn't feel good.

What others should know:

Don't waste your money on this one. Get the real one p3 you won't regret it. Cost more but it's 100% better than the Chinese one .Trust me I own a p3.

    Things I liked:

Single stroke cocking, good factory trigger, dovetail groove for optics runs entire length of pistol, price point.

    Things I would have changed:

Overall ruggedness, the sights and safety lever are especially damage-prone. Also it's louder than I anticipated. Power.... I wasn't looking for a real powerhouse @ 50 bucks, but I wasn't expecting it to be unable to launch heavy pellets! It especially loves the lighter wad cutters, like the H&N excite and the RWS Hobby.

    What others should know:

I actually really like this pistol, and when considering the negative parts of this review, one must also consider the low price point, which actually makes the negatives tolerable! I have owned this pistol for a few years and the only real issues I have encountered all pertain to the fragility of the sights. The day-glow, fiber optic insert fell out first, which I replaced with a small white piece of plastic I had on hand. Then the screw came out of the rear sight, and the sight itself fell off and I never found it in the tall grass. I mounted a cheap red-dot I had laying around, and WOW! Should have done that on day 1! Much easier to shoot now and this pistol is ACCURATE. From a bench rest, this thing will shoot quarter-sized groups all day long at 10 yards and it isn't picky about pellets either, so long as they aren't above 10gr. Above 10 grains, you'll hear a muffled "pop", no pellet comes out, and the little rubber o-ring that seals the breech goes flying off!

    Things I liked:

My favorite low budget air pistol! The trigger is good, grip is decent, the balance/weight is great. The sight is adjustable. The report is low. If you are curious about this pistol you should get it. I think this is better than any of the options below $100, possibly even below $200. I was on the fence and bought it out of curiosity and it changed my entire perspective on the low end pistols. The only reason I wouldn't get it is if you already have a bunch of PCPs, one of the high end similar options or cocking it would be problematic.

    Things I would have changed:

This isn't really possible but I wish that you could pump the pistol on the opening stroke rather than the closing stroke that way you don't risk pinching your hands when I received mine there was a screw and a spring floating inside the gun and a screw in the packaging. I was going to send it back but then I realized they belong to the rear site assembly.

    What others should know:

This is my favorite spring/piston/ssp pistol. The value is insane compared to the other comparable options (HW75, HW45, AV10, P1, P3). I'm sure the more expensive options are better but not 6-10x

    What others should know:

My pistol failed within the first month of use. Not even a tins worth of pellets. After cocking, the air would leak, later attempts, felt like the whole cocking mechanism failed. The best part of this experience was how wonderfully Pyramyd customer service was, I received a replacement soon. In fact too soon wanted negotiate an upgrade but too late. Notice the German made one people, its a lot more but would the quality difference be that much better? Well, I'll never know Happy plinking

I loved everything about this gun,,,until it died about a month later. It would leak out after cocking. I cleaned everything but it got worse, felt like something in the trigger mechanism. ,I of course didn't disassemble while under warranty. So, Pyramyd is sending me a replacement. Thank you..Thing is, I would of liked to upgrade if the P-79 assuming that the only difference is China vs. German made. Didn't have the chance.

    Things I would have changed:

This gun has everything going for it... maybe just evaluate the materials longer life.

    Things I liked:

It is a nice change from Crosman 1377, not having to pump. Makes it easy to shoot lots of rounds. Accurate out to forty feet. The trigger is decent and breaks clean and light. JSB Hades work like a dream.

    Things I would have changed:

The overall clunky design and sharp corners and edges should be smoother and more ergodynamic.Same with the loading port, it's awkward to access. And finicky, JSB hades drop right in while Crosman Premier 10.5 grains fit snug and I tried one Barracuda Green and it didnt make it out the barrel. The sights, , necer have been a fan of fiber optic sights, flimsy plastic breaks and sure will have to monkey with at some point, not if, but when.

    What others should know:

Learn to cycle and fire safely, it's a hefty push to close it up. Also had a couple instances after firing, the lock released,. Nothing major but was caught off guard the first time. I find placing my thumb on the edge near the rear sight, provides leverage. Loading is awkward and found holding the barrel more horizontally helps het the pellets the correct angle to slip in the breech. Paid the extra to have tested and there was one odd misfire maybe, they documented one shot under 300 fps and actually did eleven test shots instead of 10. Great value, more accurate and about as loud as a Red Ryder.

    Things I liked:

It's a fun gun but its harder to cock then it should be. Not easy for children and it's very easy to pinch yourself. Bought to teach how to shoot but its not the best for that purpose. Good for adults who can handle the cocking pressure.

    Things I would have changed:

Lighter cocking force, some way to guard against pinching.

    Things I liked:

Has a nice feel to it. Fun little gun once you get one working right. Decent trigger.

    Things I would have changed:

Quality control on these is very spotty. The first one I received shot several inches to the left even after adjusting the rear sight as far right as possible, and was very hard to load pellets. Pyramid promptly replaced it, but the new one came with the rear sight screw completely out, and the nut that hold it in place loose inside the receiver. It shot one time, then would not compress air. I figured I had nothing to loose, so I disassembled it, and removed the valve, which had a lot of gunk in it, cleaned out all the factory lube and replaced it with a better lube, reassembled and it hasn't acted up since. The barrel on this one is perfect. I installed a Hawke Red Dot with 11 mm mount, and at 10 meters off a rest it will shoot great groups using 7.33 JSB pellets. RWS Basic wadcutters also do well, but are a little more difficult to load.

    What others should know:

You really must clean the barrels on this as soon as you get it. There was a lot of junk/rust in both the ones I received. You have to be very careful cocking these or you will pinch you skit or catch you clothes between the grip frame and upper assembly. If you like tinkering with things like this there are a lot of tips and tricks to make these work better. Just a shame they come from the factory with so many problems.

    Quality control

    What others should know:

This is the 3rd p17 I've owned and none functioned properly. First one, purchased elsewhere, wouldn't hold pressure. Second, bought from pyramid, did the same. Took at least three pumps to get any pressure. They sent a replacement and the screw hole for the rear sights didn't have any threads. Pick another pellet gun, not this one!

    Things I liked:

For the money, you won't find better than this. Things that are great: - this gun is accurate - I left the heft and grip, and how central the center of gravity is over the grip - for a gun of any price point, trigger is very good - a very quiet report - I love a love / hate relationship with the sights; I love how visible they are - it is a great gun to shoot, but a terrible gun to reload....

    Things I would have changed:

To reload...this gun is pretty difficult to cycle / pump and finding the barrel to insert a pellet can be difficult - the sights don't always respond to adjustment - you turn the screws and sometimes nothing happens; a hard push from your thumb may be needed to actually get them to move. Also, I think the directions in the manual as to that happens to point of impact is backwards,

    What others should know:

This gun is about $50, and for that price it is a great bargain. Not suitable for kids for how hard it is to cock and load. However, it is a great gun for backyard plinking.

    Things I liked:

Very nice ergonomics. Hefty but not heavy, solid, no rattle. Came at 415 FPS on 7 grain pellets. Quiet and almost perfectly recoilless. Open sight is easy to adjust, even with your fingernails. Cocking it is a good workout! Haha. Dove rails too. All in all, very good backyard fun! And hits very hard, so be careful!

    Things I would have changed:

I don't know how, but it would be great to be able to cock it without worrying about pinching your fingers. While it's a hard cock, I'd do it with more power if I was worried about getting pinched. Loading the pellets is a bit hard, since the breech end of the barrel is in a tight spot. Not very easy to see what you're doing, but you get used to it with practice.

    What others should know:

According to the manual, the cocking effort is 28 lbs. It's definitely not the worst, but worrying about pinching yourself and small lever make it tricky. I struggled a bit hitting a 3 cm target at about 6 meters, though I feel inclined to blame these cheap pellets for it rather than the P17. Maybe getting more used to it will help, too.

    Things I would have changed:

    Things I liked:

The trigger is superb, it’s also fairly accurate, but the Crosman 1377 holds an advantage for me, perhaps because I’ve been shooting them for over 20 years. It’s a lot lighter and more compact than other pistols I’ve shot with comparable accuracy. The price is really nice too, even these days. I bought it for shots at around 10 yards at mice and other pests, so far it works really well with hollow points.

    Things I would have changed:

I have big hands/ fingers and it took a long time to be able to somewhat proficiently load pellets. Also, watch a video on how to work the pump, or you could get a painful pinch.

    What others should know:

The loading method is very different, and takes time to get used to, but it’s definitely not a deal breaker.

    Things I liked:

I LOVE this gun! No recoil, the trigger is AMAZING!!! You can stack pellets with it at 10 yards! I bought 4 guns for me and my family we shoot tournaments, outta the 4, this gun is by FAR my favorite! It's NOT pellet picky either... Not a fan of auto safety's, but that'll be removed, so not an issue... Also shoots darts really accurately! The ONLY downside to this gun is power, which I already knew, and power wasn't an issue at paper anyway... It "will" bounce off cardboard at 15 yards lol... Won't even dent or scratch a pellet tin at 10 yards... But that don't bother me at all, I bought it as a 10 yard target/competition/paper puncher and it does that with perfection!!! I'd have NO issue shooting this gun against the Air Venturi V10 ANY DAY!!! Iffen your pondering on a target 10 yard target gun, this IS one you need to pull the trigger on buying! Iffen someone handed it to me and I shot it, and they said it was a $200 gun, I'd have still bought it, it's that nice, and it's $45 LOL!!!!

    Things I would have changed:

Auto safety sucks, but would be a good thing for kids shooting...

    What others should know:

Pull the trigger, and buy this gun, then come back and comment on my review, how happy you are after buying it!!!
I guess they took adding pictures away now?
Or I'd post several, 5 shots groups in the exact same hole!!!
It'll put 5 in one hole all day long!!!
The best part NO Co2's, NO recoil, NO HPA air!!! I have went the about 600 pellets in a week lol!!!
So buy the 3 tins and get 1 one free, you'll thank me, that's how much you'll shoot it lol...
