To maintain the seals for a long time, remember to put one pump of air into the gun when putting it away after shooting. Whether you plan to shoot again the next day or not again for another 2 years, always put one pump into the gun when you're done shooting!

This air rifle has no scope rail or dovetail. An Air Venturi Intermount is attached to the breech, a Weaver/Picatinny rail is attached to the intermount and scope rings are mounted on the rail.

Combo includes Benjamin 397 rifle with an UNmounted Leapers 4x32 scope, rings and intermount with Picatinny rail (scope & mount not installed).

An American classic! The Benjamin 397 .177 cal. rifle is a multi-pump pneumatic. The hardwood Monte Carlo stock is sleek and lightweight. The rifled brass barrel is finished in black and sends pellets screaming at 800 fps! You can vary the velocity by the number of pumps (up to 8). The 397 is ideal for plinking, target shooting, slapping spinners and popping paper targets. In fact, we predict this gun will become one of your favorites.

Although this gun has been made for decades, the manufacturer continues to put extra details in the rifle, such as a swelling in the forearm to make it easier to pump and a fully adjustable rear sight.

This gun does not come equipped for a scope from the factory, therefore our specs have it listed as unscopeable. To scope this gun, you have to purchase an aftermarket rail or an intermount. This model comes with a rail and an intermount.

Things I liked:

Nice feel to the gun.

Things I would have changed:

Lots of difficulty finding a consistent cheek rest position on the stock of this gun due the height of the scope. I'm looking into crafting a movable comb or cheek piece so I have a reliable reference.

What others should know:

Good luck using the scope.

Things I liked:

I wanted the Benjamin 397 because of its reputation for being a reliable and accurate shooter with the potential to dispatch pesky rodents and such. The rifle was shipped the same day of purchase and arrived a couple of days later with all components and in good shape. I knew that the combo would need assembly and that was accomplished easily with the furnished scope mounts and allen wrenches. I was impressed by the solid, rugged feel of the whole rig once it was assembled. After running a few patches through the bore from the muzzle end to clean out any fouling, I used wad cutter pellets to sight in the Leepers scope. The length of the range in my shop is only about 21 feet, but that had do for the initial sighting in. The Leepers scope was easy to adjust and no screwdrivers were needed. I finally accomplished putting the last few pellets through an enlarged (5/8")hole dead center. Good enough until I can get outside.

Things I would have changed:

I soon found that I do not have the same strength at 80 years old that I had when I was in my twenties, and quickly found that going beyond four pumps was going to be hard for "grandpa"! I remedied that problem by adding 6 inches additional leverage to the forearm by carefully bolting a 3/4" hardwood dowel to its left side that extends back beyond the trigger guard. Works for me!

What others should know:

The stock is a hardwood variety, but not the smooth highly finished burly type so I don't worry about it getting scratched or roughed up by use. It would be nice to be able to put a sling on it for hands free carry, but that would probably interfere with the pumping action. All in all, I am very pleased and satisfied with the Benjamin 397 combo, and I would recommend it to anyone who can handle the pumping effort. A lot of gun for the money!

  • Jaacobe from USA asked:

1.) Is this rifle entirely made of REAL wood and metal? 2.) What other full metal/wood bb or combo guns are there? It is so hard to find full metal bb/combo rifles, everything is cheap plastic. I want something that will last long enough for my great grandchildren to use.

    • oats from USA answered:

The trigger guard is plastic but the rest is wood and metal . Finding a better combo would involve stepping up the food chain. Not to many multi - pump rifles are made of wood and metal anymore. I have this gun but it is the older model #342 which is all metal / wood still shoots good and looks good 42 years old. Benjamins are well made.
