If you shoot a lightweight pellet so its velocity exceeds the speed of sound, it could result in your pellet breaking the sound barrier and the gun being louder than expected! The speed of sound depends on humidity, temperature and altitude. Generally speaking, it's between 1,060 fps and 1,115 fps.

Benefits of the Nitro Piston:
  • Smoother cocking
  • Smoother shooting
  • No spring torque
  • No spring fatigue, even if you leave it cocked for hours
  • Functions perfectly in cold weather
  • Lasts longer than a metal spring

Things I liked:

Looks and feels almost exactly like the one I used in the military. I mounted a 3x9x32 Bug Buster. Using a 13.31 gr JSB Monster Jumbo, the pellet was to heavy and I had to shim the back mount. I dropped to a 10.34 domed JSB and that was perfect. This rifle is fun to shoot. Accurate to groups less than 1.5 inch out to 30 yards. Most less than an inch. Cocking effort is moderate, sling rings are nice to have and added a sling for my son to carry. Energy down range is good.

Things I would have changed:

The handle and front sights are not good. Even with the rear adjusted all the way down, it was down not far enough. I set this up for my son and put the scope on, but I would have liked good sights. Make the platform metal, and make the fake safety the real safety. The trigger is ok, better than some other Crossman's we have. A metal platform, working charging handle and safety, and good metal sights would make this a great rifle. I would pay the extra to have it.

What others should know:

If you ever carried an M-16 you will feel good with this in your hands. Its fun to shoot, can be cocked while in the prone position, and is accurate.

Things I liked:

I got one of these things right when they came out from Pyramydair. Very realistic look and feel. Fun to shoot and easy to make go supersonic with those lightweight pellets. My friends who think airguns are toys like to play with this one. Get the one with the carry handle. It shoots the cheap and easily available Crosman Premier pellets best.

Things I would have changed:

I didn't have much luck with the package scope. It shoots way low even with the screws set to the stops. After screwing around with the sights, it shoots consistently enough with open sights. The trigger is typical Crosman, being long and creepy. Accuracy is not up to par with some other .177 caliber rifles for hunting. Whatever. It's not a real expensive gun so live with it. THE BIGGEST THING IS this thing SHOULD come with the Trail NP .22 Shrouded barrel. If this was a .22 it would be a little better.

What others should know:

This is a fun and powerful rifle. it is a picky feeder if you want any kind of consistant accuracy. After extensive testing mine seems to be most consistent with the Crosman Premier HP. The expensive Gamo pellets that look cool just don't group as well. The light weight plastic and alloy pellets shoot real fast but don't group as well as the cheap Crosmans. It may just overpower most pellets but accuracy for hitting beer cans off the fence post is better than trying to hit a squirrels head at 35 yards. This gun should come in a .22 version.

Things I liked:

First of all, I like the AR15/M16 modeling of the gun. Weight is nearly exact to the real rifle. I carried an M16 over 40+ years ago in southeast Asia and can tell you this has the real feel of that gun. I also like the balance and it carries well with a shoulder strap (something you will definitely need if you're walking far with it; it is a relatively heavy gun). Power is significant. It has to be stated it is a dangerous weapon, capable of killing a person. It is NOT a kid's gun at all. Practice tight safety at all times. Its accuracy is very good at 35+ yds. However you will get flyers now and then due to pellet velocity. Still, tree rats and crows are taken out with one pellet which at 30+ yds. has fatally deep penetration. It is a bit louder than some air rifles of its class and will diesel post lubing. I alerted my neighbors living at a distance I was firing an air gun, not a .22LR. The NP system is great, has some recoil. A spring loader cannot compare.

Things I would have changed:

Charge a little more and Include a higher grade scope. I had to return mine as the one received with the rifle was simply unusable. A recoil or "butt" pad at the end of the stock would be a very nice addition both for comfort and recoil control.

What others should know:

You may need to search for a pellet that will work best for you with this rifle. I tried different weights and designs (I read heavier pellets had better accuracy ....couldn't prove that from 7.2 gr to 15.4 gr, various designs. Resulted in a lot of re-zeroing the sope and loss of velocity around 8.5 gr and beyond. I settled on the 7.85 gr Winchester domed pellets. I think the aerodynamics and weight work well with my particular gun. Remember nothing is perfect in mass construction, especially rifling of the barrels. You'll find the one that works for you. Do not expect much from the included scope. It's not trash but it's not highly reliable either, drifts off center within a short period of time. If you want a scope, I recommend a 3 - 9 x 40 with a solid brand name. More money, yeah, but for higher level use of a gun like this, i.e. you're not just plinking cans (which is fun), it's necessary for greater accuracy and therefore more enjoyment.
