Shooting air pistols for sport is a big part of the Airgun Experience, but there is another side that I often stress, and that is using authentic 1.77 caliber airguns for real world training. By authentic I mean airguns that are nearly exact in design, operation and handing to their cartridge-firing counterparts. These airguns have to be good enough to use for firearms training purposes such as reloading drills, target acquisition exercises, holster carry and drawing, and all the various regimens used for basic firearms training, whether for civilian carry or law enforcement. Learning the basics with zero-recoil airguns allows initial firearms familiarization at a cost that is just a fraction of training with “real” guns, and make no mistake, high quality BB cartridge-loading revolvers like the Umarex S&W licensed Model 327 TRR8, look and feel just as “real” right up to the point where you pull the trigger! read more

This new rifled barrel, pellet-firing Peacemaker is your Huckleberry!

With an overall length of 11 inches and weighing 33 ounces, (about 4 ounces lighter than a .45 Caliber 5-1/2 inch Peacemaker), the Umarex Colt SAA has the same looks, and comes with distinctive black grips featuring a Rampant Colt medallion. (Holster by .45Maker)

Note the c.1892 transverse cylinder latch and authentic cartridge ejector housing.

This new nickel finished Colt SAA pellet model comes fitted with special black panel grips and a Colt Peacemaker Rampant Colt inset emblem. In all respects other than what comes out of the recessed .45 Colt muzzle, the pellet model looks identical to the earlier .177 caliber BB models, which is to say very much like a nickel plated c.1892 smokeless powder frame Colt Single Action Army revolver. read more

Since 1873 there have been many variations of the legendary Colt Peacemaker but never a cartridge loading CO2 BB or pellet model until Colt and Umarex teamed up last year to build an authentic, Colt branded, .177 caliber Peacemaker. The Umarex Colt 1873 Single Action Army is accurate in virtually every detail, right down to the SEPT. 18. 1871 JUL2.72JAN.19.75 patent dates stamped on the left side of frame and the Rampant Colt emblem. read more

The training experience

Part 2

by Dennis Adler

In a blowback design air pistol, the CO2 capsule performs two functions, first propelling a BB down range at an average velocity of 325 fps (feet per second) and second, operating the recoil of the slide to re-cock the hammer and chamber the next BB. The pistol’s all-metal construction (including the magazine) provides a hefty feel in the hand (34 oz. loaded) approximating a real Colt Model 1911.

The Colt Commander safety on the airgun is marked with an S and F and an arrow. This helps to lean familiarization with use of the manual thumb safety. Also note the airgun comes with a modern skeletonized trigger and Delta-style skeletonized hammer.

The Colt Commander safety on the airgun is marked with an S and F and an arrow. This helps to learn familiarization with use of the manual thumb safety on the cartridge-firing models, which do not have an S or F printed on the safety lever. Also note the airgun comes with a modern skeletonized trigger and Delta-style skeletonized hammer.

The Colt Commander features a modern skeletonized trigger and Commander-style hammer, fixed front and rear white dot tactical sights, checkered raised mainspring housing, black diamond checkered hard plastic grips, fully operating beavertail safety, thumb safety, and slide release. It also has a military-style tether ring at the bottom of the backstrap. Every aspect of handing the 1911 airgun is a training experience. read more

The Umarex Colt Model 1911 is a top choice for 1911-style airguns as well as an ideal option for training. All of the operating features of a .45 Colt Model 1911 are accurately duplicated on the airgun.

In terms of training exercises there are numerous advantages to owning the Umarex Colt Commander Model 1911 blowback action air pistol, as this duty-sized handgun operates in the same fashion as a cartridge-firing Colt .45 ACP semi-auto. Specific 1911 training regimens can be practiced with this blowback action air pistol right down to loading the magazine, chambering the first round and pulling the trigger. This helps to improve skills such as trigger control and sight reacquisition, particularly with this type of air pistol since the slide functions with each shot just like a .45 ACP semi-auto. All that is missing is the recoil and report. read more

Among the features that have long distinguished BB guns from cartridge firing revolvers are the fundamentals of how they operate. Modern cartridge guns have swing out cylinders that chamber from five to eight cartridges, depending upon the model. With air pistols, the cartridge hurdle was cleared by Umarex when they began offering authentic models like the S&W TRR8 and the legendary Colt Python; revolvers with swing out cylinders and six cartridges that hold a steel BB in the nose of each hollow point round. These guns are remarkably precise in appearance, loading, (they even use speed loaders) and single action/double action operation. In essence, they are good enough for firearms training purposes, reloading drills, and target acquisition exercises, as the guns have adjustable sights. Currently there are similar revolver versions from Crossman and Swiss Arms, as well as those from Umarex, but what they all lack is a rifled barrel for greater accuracy and shooting the vaunted 10 meter air pistol discipline. read more

To evaluate the Tanfoglio Gold Gustom I selected Hornady Black Diamond black anodized steel BBs, which are high quality BBs with proven accuracy. For a target I used an IPSC cardboard competition target (with A, B, C, D target zones) which was set out at 21 feet, the nominal distance for blowback action air pistols (although the Tanfoglio also shoots very well at 10 meters). read more
