According to SIG Sauer's "History" web page, " Just seven years after constructing an industrial plant for building the most sophisticated wagons and railway cars, the three ambitious owners undertook a more serious venture," it reads. "In part to a challenge from Switzerland's Federal Ministry of Defense, the Swiss Wagon Factory entered the competition to develop a state-of-the-art rifle with the hopes the Swiss Army would adopt it."
Adopt it, the government did, and, in 1864, the Swiss Wagon Factory received an order for 30,000 muzzleloading Prelaz-Burnand rifles. This is also when its founders changed the name of the company to the Swiss Industrial Company -- Schweizerische Industrie-Gesellschaft - or SIG for short. From there, SIG would grow exponentially, in terms of the numbers of firearms it was producing and supplying to government, law enforcement, sporting and commercial customers.
"In 1949, the SIG P49, the forerunner of the SIG P210, was developed for the Swiss Army and destined to become a legend on the battlefield as well as the competition field," SIG Sauer states. "That same year, the P220 made its appearance as the new pistol for the army, soon followed by the compact P230 for the Swiss police. These pistols offered new features and levels of reliability never before seen in the industry."
In 1985, SIG became SIGARMS, Inc., which would remain its brand name for 22 years, until officially becoming SIG Sauer in 2007. In 2015 SIG expanded to include suppressors, optics, ammo and airguns.
Thanks in large part to the fact that SIG Sauer designs, engineers and manufactures its own airguns in the same facility where the firearms they copy are made, the company has the ability to control every facet of the airgun-making process. By applying the same rigorous quality standards to its airgun lineup as it does its firearms - at the same manufacturing plant and training/testing facility, no less - SIG Sauer produces some of the most realistic, functional air pistols and air rifles on the market today. Thanks to their authenticity and the fact that they represent some of the most popular guns in the world, they make for ideal training tools when it's impractical or too costly to use firearms and live ammo for practicing tactics.
