An American classic gets an update with the synthetic-stocked Benjamin 397S/392S multi-pump pneumatic Air rifle series.

Although it's been a part of the Benjamin air-rifle lineup for decades, the company has continued adding improvements like a swelling in the forearm to make it easier to pump and a fully adjustable rear sight, for example. Its sleek, Monte Carlo style stock has been reintroduced in a synthetic option that's durable and all-weather rated for years of reliable accuracy.

The 392S/397S series features a rifled brass barrel painted black. It's a bolt-action air rifle with which the shooter may control the muzzle velocity depending on the number of pumps. And, although these guns are scopeable, the B272 intermount is required to do so.

Ideal for everything from small-game hunting and pesting, to plinking and target practice, the Benjamin 397S is an accurate, powerful, reliable shooter that is suitable for a variety of tasks and they're built to last and last.

This air rifle has no scope rail or dovetail. An Air Venturi Intermount is attached to the breech, a Weaver/Picatinny rail is attached to the intermount and scope rings are mounted on the rail.

Combo includes Benjamin 397 rifle with an Unmounted Mantis 3-9x32 AO Rifle Scope and Leapers Premium 1" Rings (scope & mount not installed). This gun does not come equipped for a scope from the factory, therefore our specs have it listed as unscopeable. To scope this gun, you have to purchase an aftermarket rail or an intermount. This kit comes with a rail and an intermount.

Note: To maintain the seals for a long time, remember to put one pump of air into the gun when putting it away after shooting. Whether you plan to shoot again the next day or not again for another 2 years, always put one pump into the gun when you're done shooting!

Things I liked:

Fairly easy to pump

Things I would have changed:

Would be nice if there was atleast weaver rail on the gun.

What others should know:

Good for plinking and small pest control

Things I liked:

It's a solid rifle. Well made and powerful. The scope included in this kit is amazing and attaches securely with the rail and mount. I had it close to sighted in after about 10 shots. I'm not a great shot but I'm doing pretty good at 100 feet.

Things I would have changed:

The trigger isn't the best. 2 stage adjustable would have been nice.

What others should know:

This rifle is HARD to pump. If you want to get to 10 pumps (the max) it becomes a workout. Honestly after 5 shots I need to give my arms and elbows a break. This rifle is not ideal for casual plinking, etc. I kinda wish I got a break-barrel but I like it enough to keep it.

Things I liked:

Solid, beautiful finish, great etchings, a real powerhouse. Mine is a .22.

Things I would have changed:

Well, I bought mine elsewhere since PA did not have any at the time. Disappointed on this one. Front sight was angled vertically and horizontally to the left instead of straight on. Same issue with the 1077 I own. Benjamin should have corrected this long ago.. There are numerous blogs and reviews out there that mention this issue. Hence I cannot give this rifle the 5, I would like to give it. Tried to bend the sight. Cheap metal it broke. Superglue and black electrical tape meticulously applied and trimmed makes it hard to notice. Still the sight is obviously not in line as it should be. I put a Bug Buster scope on it, but still for the money: not acceptable. Cheek weld on stock is a little high. I manage tough. Don't get me wrong. It's a keeper and one that I am sure will provide years of service and reliability. Dead on with the scope for accuracy. Make a camo stock and maybe a camo with black trim. And don't forget Muddy girl theme. I have daughters to.

What others should know:

Aside from the mentioned issues: It is still worth having. At least you know the issues up front if you read this review. Does take some effort to pump. Do it often enough and your upper torso and arms will get stronger and well defined.

  • Kevin from USA asked:

With a scope on it, where do you grab the gun when you pump it? The scope is mounted right where I get the best leverage.

    • Patrick from USA asked:

two Questions- What is the Torque spec for the Air Venturi Intermount to the rifle? What is the torque spec for the screws from the rail to the top of the rings?

      • Mark from USA answered:

There is no spec for tightening the screws. Tighten until the mount holds firm.

    • Christopher from USA asked:

Does the scope make it difficult to load a pellet in the breach?

      • Mark from USA answered:

No. The scope mount is high enough for easy access.
