Heralded by firearms collectors, enthusiasts and historians as one of the best rifles ever made, the ubiquitous Mauser Model K98 is probably most commonly recognized as the standard firearm of the German Army in both world wars. But Germany was far from the only country that outfitted its military with this reliable, battle-proven workhorse. More than 30 nations used it or one of its variations over the years, with the total number of K98s produced estimated around 102 million. From Argentina to Yemen, the K98 has seen service with armies all over the world.

Thanks to the skilled gunsmiths at Ense, Germany-based Diana, who have already recreated it as a spring-piston air rifle, you can now own a pre-charged pneumatic version of the venerable bolt-action rifle. Outfitted with a real hardwood stock, rifled steel barrel, metal sights and authentic, bolt-action operation, this compressed-air powered Mauser clone is a premium, high-quality replica firearm anyone who appreciates such a historically significant gun would love to get a hold of.

Weighing in at 6.6 lbs, this K98 replica has nearly the heft and feel of the real McCoy. It features similarly placed controls and the action works like that of a firearm.  Whether you’re a collector who owns the real-steel deal and would rather not shoot it, an airgun aficionado who simply has to have the latest and greatest air rifles on the market or are simply looking for an accurate, reliable shooter for plinking, pesting or taking small game, this could be the perfect PCP for you.

Things I liked:

The rifle ie solid. The bolt comes back feeling heavy and cocks with authority, much like a real military rifle. The rifle has good accuracy at 25 yards with the supplied open iron sights. Add a 4X scope and the accuracy is excellent. I am not saying that the accuracy is Olympic grade, but it is very good. In several instances I was able to put five shots into an area the size of a nickel with a 4X scope @ 25 yards. My model is a .22 shooting JSB 13.8g Diablo heavy. Crosman premier 14.7g .22 HP group just as well and are still cheap compared to other brands.

Things I would have changed:

The rifle needs a larger air reservoir or one that will take greater pressure. The air chamber pressure falls rather quickly limiting the number of magazines that can be fed through before a refill is needed. The open iron sights should be all metal. The ramp is black plastic. There is no windage adjustment, which is a pain unless you add a scope, red dot or some other type of sight. The pull from the hand hold on the stock to the trigger is a bit long. A person with a small hand might have problems stretching across that distance. The trigger pull is Ok, but could be better. The first stage is easily felt, the second stage is positive with a consistent break point. I would like a lighter trigger pull, but the factory trigger is pretty good, but not what I would call target grade.

What others should know:

The stock is all wood with a metal plate, and the stock looks great. Some of the other parts are plastic to add to the authentic look, but all they do is add to the look so plastic is fine. The magazine is well made, heavy, and operates easily. Very dependable feeding. I think the noise level is slightly below medium and back yard friendly in most cases. You can actually put a sling on this rifle using the hole in the stock. The sling will hang from the side. I have been shooting this rifle for almost one year and no malfunctions. The rifle takes 11mm scope mounts, the small ones. The amount of rail for scope mounting is small. The magazine sticks up above the receiver a long way, so you need to mount the scope high or use a sighting device that doesn’t go over the magazine area.

Things I liked:

this rifle is ligh and easy to handle. plenty of power for target shooting. good fit and finish. iron sights are fine for casual plinking. whisper quiet. single shot tray is great.

Things I would have changed:

larger air cylinder. trunks out of power after 20 shots. magazines are expensive.

What others should know:

buy an air compressor or work on your abs because pumping this gun up is a workout.

Things I liked:

I received mine a few days ago. What an absolutely beautiful replica. Sure not everything is 100% spot on. But this is a very close replica to the K98. Out of all my air rifles, this is now my absolute favorite. Just something about this gun. I am shooting the HN 21gr slugs and getting plenty of power and accuracy at 25 yards using the open sights. I plan on taking this groundhog hunting on the farm this year because I personally believe this will take them at that 25 yard range. Once I get this out hunting I will update my review or post another review. If you love WW2 guns this is a must have!
