4 of 4 Gamo Whisper Classic with Nitro Piston Reviews
Wood stock has a much better look and feel than the plastic .Cool Gamo logo engraved in bottom of stock. Nice touch. Nitro piston improves accuracy.Still has a good amount of recoil..but it's easier to control.Thick rubber butt pad. I have a standard spring Whisper and a Nitro Whisper. The standard one is quiet but makes a lot of spring noise. This version makes the rifle extra quiet.
Things I Would Have ChangedGamo Scope is OK. Difficult to focus on higher magnification .. If you want serious accuracy..get a better scope. I have a Center Point 3X9 X 40 Adventure Class scope on mine. The one I ordered from Pyramid in Sep 2010 still had the older 2 stage tetal trigger. Not the best trigger... But I was happy because I was able to modify it with the GRT III. Don't know if all the Classics have the metal trigger....Or if this one was from older stock.
What Others Should KnowIt took a day of shooting for the accuracy to improve. At first I thought a had a bad barrel but it improved after running some cleaning pads in it. A good amount of grime came out of it. I should have cleaned it before I took the first shot.
People that say a whisper isn't really quiet... are wrong. Between the Noise dampener and the Nitro piston..This gun is extremely quiet. My neighbor was watching me shoot from 30 feet away and commented that all he could hear was the pellet striking the wooden backstop.
The nitro piston does make it a little harder to cock. The resistance in spring version gets greater near the end of the stroke..The Nitro takes more cocking effort from the start to the end. I've fired the standard version for many months without a problem...But after a few days of shooting the Nitro.... My arm is a sore.... Good workout..
For some reason the Crosman Premier 7.9 Hollow Points are more accurate than the regular Crosman Premier 10.5 domed...JSB Exact diablo seemed loose in the bore.
I like the feel of the Gamo Whisper Classic. Balance is good and the wood stock, while plain, was finished well on the outside. There is a world of difference between the metal spring and gas ram upgrade.
Things I Would Have ChangedWhile I am new to spring guns, I felt the stock trigger in the Whisper and Big Cat I purchased earler to be somewhat bb gun quality. I also found the trigger housing had sharp edges that needed a little cleanup work to help make the trigger pull a little smoother. I added a GRT-III trigger from Charlie DeTuna and the pull now is feather light. The other thing i would change is the scope. I still have not been able to get a clear image at full zoom.
What Others Should KnowI had previously purchased a Gamo Big Cat so I was expecting the Whisper to be much quieter. My first shot brought the neighbors out to see who was shooting a gun. After about 3 shots the oil had burned off and the gun was shooting much quieter than the Big Cat. I did not experience a diesel shot with the Big Cat so I was totally surprised to hear a report louder than a 22LR.
I did a lot of research, including type of pellets to try. So far I shoot better patterns with the Crossman Distroyer pellet. I have tried Gamo red cone, Gamo armor, RWS Super H Point and the Gamo PBA pellets. The latter as far as I am concerned are only good for demonstrating the gun can shoot super sonic and make more noise. These pellets also seem to tumble and hit sideways.
I had mine changed to the nitro piston, much quieter, no recoil and more accuracy. The cocking is about the same, no noticable difference. Speed with a 7.4 grain pellet was 965, with the gamo raptor it was 1154, very fast.
Things I Would Have ChangedI also installed a Charlie Da tuna trigger. stopped all of the trigger creep.

The Gamo Whisper Classic w/nitro piston is indeed quiet. The muzzle noise is very refined and the sound the shooter hears is comparative to a .22 short being shot out of a rifle. I have only 500 pellets through the rifle at this time and have not heard much of a change on the quieter side the same as others that have posted on this site. The illuminated front and back sights were very good and quite accurate. I discovered early on that the spring under the rearsight ramp was not seated properly and once that was resolved, the sight worked great. Shooting the 7.8gr Crosman Premier (1250 ct. boxed) performed exceptionally well with a standard hunting hold (grasped forearm with tipical grip hold pulling into shoulder. When doing this from a bagged rest, allowing the back of my left hand to rest on the bag while gripping the forearm and pulling the stock back into the shoulder and allowing the butt of the gun to contact the bench bag, I was abe to shoot a nickel size group of 5 shots using open sights at 15yds.
Things I Would Have ChangedI would highly recommend the GRT-3 trigger conversion since the pull between 1st and 2nd stage is agonizing and throws your shots off because you have a tendency to pull more with the 2nd stage. I would also recommend the scope upgrade. My rifle package came with the 3x9 x40 variable with non paralax adjustability. A fixed 6power with good base rings would be my choice.
What Others Should KnowWhen shooting with open sights, I attained good accuracy with the pellets that I was using. However, when shooting with the supplied scope, I was unable to obtain a satisfactory group at 25/35/40 yards, without having fliers. If I would have just depended on the scope as defining my shooting ability and "Searched" for various pellets that my rifle may or may not shoot well, I could have been searching for some time. However with being able to find that I could shoot well with the Crosman Premier with open sights, but not well with the scope, helped me to eliminate the rifle's digestive traits early on. This worked for me.
