Vipha – Western States Field Target Championships – August 15-16, 2015

Both myself and my husband were excited to go to see Scott and Allen in the Pismo, Moral Bay Area. This area is very popular with the tourists.  There is the Moral Bay Rock and it is also the Gateway to the famous Pacific Coast highway 1 north to Big Sir, Monterey, and San Francisco.

When we arrived, it was sunny and hot, however everyone was already out getting their rifles zeroed in.   We tried to get our rifles zeroed in, however the wind was too much to get any kind of zero so we thought that we could wait till evening, however the wind did not die down much, we would have to wait until morning.

We spent the rest of the evening visiting with all our friends that enjoy shooting air rifles and that share this sport of air rifle competition. It was great to see everyone. Larry Piercy and Robert Buchanan from Air Guns of Arizona were there for the competition and it was nice to see them hanging out with everyone, as it has been several years since we have seen them.  We used to shoot together at Lake Murry, near Flagstaff in Arizona which is also near The Grand Canyon.

Later that evening, we had the famous Tri-Tip meal that Scott and his staff prepare.  This is quality meat, no fat, tender and the best tasting you can get. I told my husband, I don’t care how I shoot, I want to go just for the great tasting, quality, food and see Scott, Allen, and our friends.

The next morning, my husband got my rifle zeroed in perfect, so I ended up in first place at the end of the first day, however I fell apart on the second day from the pressure and the wind.  I knew that the next day would be completely different for me and it was.

I can’t imagine how difficult it must have been to shoot the 12 ft. lb. class.  Son Lu won the 12 ft.lb. PCP class over Gabriel Lucero, Colin His, George Doganis and David Messineo.  Son Lu was shooting his 12 Ft. lb. Steyr with JSB 7.9.  A very light pellet for this wind. Amazing.  Congratulations Son.

The wind must have been even worse for the spring guns, however the master spring gunner, Scott Hull, as usual, won this class. ( less Allen Hull )  Scott lives just down the road with his wife and son Allen.  Scott was happy that his son, Allen was match director, and did not shoot, as Allen and Scoot are the best in what ever class that they shoot and no mater where they shoot, they are the ones everyone hopes that they don’t show up.  Practice, Practice, work on the rifles, and practice some more. They both do  their homework and get the job done.  Congratulations Scott. Excellent Shooting.

John Knapp was second in the spring gun class, a great finish in this very open windy shooting area.  They must have to hold off three inches or more to hit these long, open targets.  I can’t think of how far they have to hold off, as I have never shoot a spring gun.  I do not even own one, so how could I.

Jeff Carmello was a strong third. Jeff had the best finish for our CASA club in the spring class, I also like him as he is a lot of fun to be around and one of the nicest guys in our CASA club.

Vince Pacheco is a strong contender, and usually places well here at Pismo, he placed a strong fourth place. Vince also lives just down the road, not far from the Hulls home.  Vince has helped me for many years and supports both me and my husband.   We owe Vince a lot for our success over the last several years. Vince is also a very good person, as good as they come.   Also from CASA, Tim McMurray and Larry Durham have helped us with both our rifles and in our shooting. Both Tim and  Larry have been a great help in getting the excellent performance out of our P-70 rifles.  Tim is always at our local matches and holds the pistol and off hand matches at the L.A. range. Tim is always there to help me in what ever I may need or when ever I am in trouble.  I can never thank Tim enough for all the help he has been for me.   I try to buy everything that I can from Tim, as he is the one that is always at our match, helping everyone and supporting our club. Thank you Tim for all your help and all the work you do for our CASA Club.

Jim Poh, Carlos Iglosias, and Glen Harvey finished up this spring gun class that I have been told is so difficult to master.  I take my hat off to all of spring gun shooters.

In the open PCP Class,  the best PCP Shooter in the west won again.  He has dominated the PCP class this year out here in the West and deserves this recognition as the Best in the West.  I am talking about Riz Marques. Always fun to be around and he always tries to be the best he can be.  Congratulations Riz.

Hector Alfaro came in a strong third with a great score on the hard, open East course.   Hector is also from CASA and works hard to make our club what it is today.  Hector also gave me $ 20 dollars, which I spent on some excellent Subs which I bought from Scott and Allen for the long drive home. Thank you Hector for the subs which we enjoyed on the way home and if the $20 is available next time, I’ll let you win again.  Hector beat me by one point with his great last day of shooting.  I came in Fourth, after falling apart on the second day.

Lonnie Smith had a great finish, with a strong 5th place, one shot behind fourth. Fred Biergiel, Randy Ebersole and Bill Tramel for 6th, 7th and 8th. Bill shoots with us at CASA, using an excellent shooting USFT.

I won High Lady, but I also won the Grand prize drawing, the Pyarmyd Air donated RWS Model 34 Piston, Spring Rifle.  This is my first spring gun and I am looking forward to shooing my first spring gun.  This turned out to be a great prize and I am so happy to own a spring gun now.  I could not believe that I won this great Spring gun. Thank you Pyramyd Air.

We would like to thank Allen for the great time we had there shooting, for the excellent food and for all the fun we have seeing everyone again. Looking forward to next year.

We left with our Subs. and headed for Highway 1, up the coast.   We went past the Hurst Castle, up the coast on highway 1 past Ragged Point, stopped by  for a picnic  and viewed the beautiful sights of the coast line, the beautiful sun set over the Pacific, ate our Subs and then headed home, thinking what a great time we had.
