Low impact paintballs are smaller with a thinner shell and don't hurt on impact like higher impact paintballs. These low-impact paintballs are better for players who bruise easily like children and older adults. The smaller caliber and thinner shell have a lower force of impact and break more easily, leaving players marked without the welts received by higher impact paintballs.
The liquid inside the paintballs is water soluble and made to wash off skin and out of clothing. Some have been known to stain fabric, so it's recommended to wear clothing you specifically designate for gameplay, and not something you'd wear to other activities.
Paintballs are temperature sensitive and should be kept in a cool, dry place. Only use fresh paintball ammo for each match. Paint balls that have been left out can dry and crack, or break in the barrel of your marker, neither of which is good for the game. Heat causes more damage to paintballs than cold. If they get hot they could melt and be completely unusable. The cold makes them more solid and less breakable, which increases their impact force.
While paintball is a relatively harmless sport, the paintball ammo hits at velocity and can cause damage. While paintballs won't break your skin, if you play unprotected they could put out an eye. So, it's highly recommended to wear safety gear, especially a mask or goggles. Stay safe and have fun!
