Lead You To A Purchase
This is a blog about confidence or lack thereof. In order to shoot a bow you must have one in possession right? Sometimes you borrow a friend’s and it may lead to you purchasing your own. Just imagine, you order the Bear Archery White Tail Maxx Compound Bow with all the accessories included. It shows up on your doorstep and then what?
The only experience you have with a compound bow is shooting your buddies a few times. As you pull the items out of the box, first the naked bow, you look at it with excitement and think, “I can’t wait to shoot you!” Next you pull a smaller box out and open it to find a truck load of accessories that you have absolutely no idea where they go or how to properly mount them. I get to ask the same question, then what?
Are You Crazy? Don’t Send It Back!
Don’t box that thing back up and send it back! There are options, let me push you into the corner till you give in and check out your options! First let me explain to you what the accessories are in that little overwhelming box.
With the Volt Kit you’re looking at the Ridgeline 5 pin sight, 5 spot quiver, Static Stabilizer, Wrist Sling, and a Sync full capture drop away rest. I know, I know, you’re still sitting there saying, “AND!” Now that you have an idea of what the accessories are you can read the instructions and decide whether or not you’re a good student.
If reading directions don’t cut it for you, I’m sure there are other online options to get help or…Don’t feel bad the world, even the archery world, is full of different types of learners. I’m a more hands-on learner myself. I like to watch someone else run through it once, then supervise me while I attempt to get it right. What kind of learner are you?
More Than You Think
I’m not going to misinform you, there is more to setting up your compound bow then attaching the accessories. You need to find out what the appropriate draw length and weight is for you as well as sight it in. If you’re good at following directions this can be done without an expert’s supervision, but be honest, are you?
Another option, do your research, here are a few ideas.
- Check with the place you purchased your new bow and see if there is an option for their experts to set it up and send in a hard case.
- They may also offer step by step instructions over the phone with an expert.
- Contact your local archery shop or archery club and see what they have to offer.
Honesty Is Crucial
Honesty is crucial, if you’re truly confident you can follow instructions and get it done right, man go for it! If you’re going into thinking, “I have no idea what I’m doing but I’ll give it a shot and see where it goes! Here hold my…” You may be paying with more than humiliation when all is said and done. Who said asking for help was so bad anyway?
Last question, are you confident, are you a great learner or are you a little unsure sometimes? Learn from the experts before attempting something as important as this!
“The only experience you have with a compound bow is shooting your buddies a few times”.
Yikes! With buddies like you, who needs enemies? ;o)
Bob,
Yes. “Throw mama from the train…a kiss.”

BB,
Yep, grammar and punctuation are small things that can make a big difference. Compare “Let’s eat, grandma!” with “Let’s eat grandma!” 🙂
One hopes the Bow Bully intended to write “The only experience you have with a compound bow is shooting your buddy’s a few times”, but until he confirms as much, I would recommend keeping out of bowshot of that man.
Bob Ryan,
Good catch! Definitely a typo, my fingers flew past the entire word “with”. I’ve enjoyed the conversation it provoked though. I appreciate you bringing that out.
Thanks for reading!

Thanks for the humor, intended or not; good to start the day with a chuckle. Being able to follow directions is important in many areas of life. It is also important, indeed crucial, that directions be clear, concise, logical and easy to follow. The writing of good instructions/directions and the ability to impart them are skills which FM fears are being rapidly eroded. Aforesaid erosion applies also to the ability of people to understand and absorb the information instructions/directions are meant to convey.
FawltyManuel,
Humor indeed! I would that I typed the correct thing, but it gave me a chuckle as well.
All very good points brought out, it may be that there is less required of people now than a time ago.
Till next time!
Thanks for reading!

TBB,
My pleasure!
I enjoy your reports and look forward to learning more about the sport.
Btw, do you have any tips for locating arrows that have missed their target and buried fully into soft ground?
Is this one of your buddies? 😉 (Saint Edmund the Martyr)
