Crossbow Schmossbow! Just close your eyes, click on one and drop it in the cart! If that’s what you think, don’t buy a crossbow yet, do your research. If that’s how you shop for anything I wonder if you ever smile! Let’s look at the specs of the Ravin R470 Crossbow.
In the description it mentions hunting at least four times, I’m going to guess this one was designed specifically for hunting. If you look at different crossbows, you’ll notice the majority of them can be used for hunting as well, but what kind of hunting? Big, medium, or small game? After reading up on it, I’m confident you could use it for all of the above, that’s if you can make the shot on a smaller target’s kill zone.
Using 400 grain arrows the Ravin R470 Crossbow produces 470 FPS, that’s 196 FPE! That answers that question, a hunter indeed! The cams rotate 360 degrees, which is called the Hexcoil system, that is how it accomplishes such great speeds!
This one is intended for hunters who want great speed, power, and accuracy, in a more compact design. If you ask me, I don’t run into too many hunters that say, “Hey man, give me the bulkiest, heaviest bow you’ve got!”
Speaking of size the total weight is 8.4 lbs, a total length of 27 inches. From axle to axle the total width uncocked is 7.6 inches and cocked is 4.3. That seems pretty manageable whether hunting from the ground or a tree, don’t you think? An answer to what most hunters would be looking for.
Ravin has thought of you every step of the way, they’ve included the basics to get you shooting to get accustomed to it as soon as possible. Here’s what’s included.
- Crossbow (duh)
- 100-yard illuminated 550 FPS Crossbow Scope
- Draw Handle
- Three pack of Ravin R500 arrows with field points
- A quiver and a mounting bracket
That will get you started but for hunting I would recommend picking up some G5 Megameat 100 Grain Crossbow Broadheads as well as some extra Ravin HD 500 Grain Arrows for back up.

A few more details that may interest you, but it may not, maybe you have all the information on this one you need. The powerstroke is 13 inches, the draw force is 17 pounds, it includes a weaver/picatinny rail for the included optic, or something else you may have in mind. It is ambidextrous and is available in two color patterns, black or XK7 Camo.
Let’s circle back to where we started. If you want something that is going to serve the purpose well, do your research, know your budget and your physical capabilities or limits. In every category of products to buy, there really is something for everybody. Just because it’s for you doesn’t mean it’s for me, I mean my arms are six inches longer than yours and your max draw weight is 75 pounds! Are you kidding me, I’m happy at 55. I’ll say it again, do your research and make your purchases work for you!
196 FPE… practically like a .50BMG 🙂
And quite as expensive, if not more…
