Pyramyd Air tested both the .177- and .22-caliber airguns and found the velocities to be higher than what the manufacturer has stated. Below are some comparisons:

    .177 caliber:
    Manufacturer--820 fps
Our tests--Up to 849 fps with 7.0-grain RWS Hobby pellets

    .22 caliber:
    Manufacturer--574 fps
Our tests--Up to 650 fps with 11.9-grain RWS Hobby pellets & 595 fps with 14.66-grain Beeman Field Target Trophy pellets

While this is the "S" model and has a Rekord trigger, the manufacturer does not stamp the gun with an "S."

Things I liked:Excellent for off hand shooting with very smooth cocking and firing actions; great Rekord trigger; quite obvious German quality and build; unblemished stock with checkering; complete ambidexterity; open sights included!
    Things I would have changed:????NA
    What others should know:did not need a droop compensator mount on my HW50s; @22 cal moves 22 rimfire spinner target adequately;

Things I liked:What a nice, quality .22 air rifle. I love the stock & checkering of Pyramid's offering. Of course the gun is accurate and the metal work is beautiful. Not too big or small.
    Things I would have changed:Nothing.
What others should know:Some reviews say it is harder to cock than the 24 lbs. in the specs. I tend to agree. It takes more effort than I would like considering this is a 12 ftp or less rifle. However, after about 100 shots it is smoothing out quite nicely and it should be getting better & better as time goes on.

Things I liked:What a great air rifle! Looks great. Great size and weight. I love the options of the multiple front inserts. The stock is beautiful. The trigger is awesome. Balances well when shooting.
Things I would have changed:It was a bit gritty and twangy out of the box. I cleaned and polished up the internals, and I also installed a Vortek kit and now it shoots absolutely amazing. Now it is quiet and smooth and producing just over 11 ft/lbs of energy. I removed the rear sight and put on a Williams aperture sight. I love this set up.
What others should know:This is still a great great rifle even without the tuning kit. You will not regret buying this rifle. You really do get what you pay for.

    • Dan from USA asked:

I bought an HW50s this year and the velocity with 7.0 gr RWS Basics is just 750 fps. Rifle has a thwack sound when firing, without any vibration. Wondering if there is a problem with the lower than stated velocity?

      • Dan the Man from USA:

It sounds like your rifle is under powered. You might want to ship it to Pyramyd for service, they do work on them.

What rear peep do you people recommend for this rifle, keeping front globe?

    • Dan from USA asked:

Is there such a thing as a too heavy pellet for this rifle? What grain pellet is best, and what is too heavy?

      • Chevota from USA:

Springers lose power as pellet weight goes up, and typically there's a certain weight where power drops off faster so you don't want to cross that line unless you have excess power, which this gun does not. Where this line is varies on the guns design and power, but it's probably low to mid 7gr with this gun. I have a similar gun with almost exactly the same power and a 7.3gr has 25% more power than a 10.5gr. Considering this guns power level I would probably consider 8.4gr my max. So I'd try 7.0 to 8.4 to see how it does. I'd also only buy quality pellets for it, like JSB or H&N, and look at the BC of whatever pellet to be sure it's good so you can get the most from it. Something like a 7gr wadcutter will work well for paper targets at 10M, but hunting is a very different story. JSB makes 7.3, 7.8, and 8.4 which are excellent quality and have good BC. Which one you or the gun will like better I can't say so I'd try them all, and other brands too. Pointed pellets may look good but the round nose have much better BC. Hollow points are cool but the only one I'd consider are Crow Magnum which are a bit too heavy for this gun, but doesn't hurt to try 'em. You can't hurt the gun shooting heavier pellets, it's just the power and velocity loss you have to deal with. For example that 7.3-10.5 I mentioned was a 240fps loss.
