Historically, the Roach-Bellied knife was a short blade with a pronounced upswept curve and a sharp point that saw popularity in 17th century Britain and the American Colonies. It was most likely named after the common Roach Fish, which had a similarly round curving belly. Cold Steels model is a nod to the Black Powder Community, which has continued to appreciate the Roach Bellys economy, versatility and effectiveness. The hollow ground blade is made of sub-zero quenched German 4116 Stainless steel, expertly heat treated to RC 56-57, and given a sharp edge thats easy to maintain. Instead of the traditional wood handle, ours is made of a tough injection molded polymer, making the Roach Belly considerably more weatherproof than historical examples - not swelling, shrinking, rotting or cracking like its wooden counterparts. The Roach Belly comes complete with a durable polymer sheath, making it a breeze to carry all day or on extended hunting or camping adventures.

It came fairly sharp but needed touched up to get it user sharp. I've only used it in the kitchen so far but it works very well as a large paring knife. I will use it for fishing as the 4116 is a good stainless steel. This is a good primary or only knife for freshwater fish, small to medium game, and meal prep.

I bought this from a supplier in Australia a few years ago and used it at work most of the time for doing jobs around conveyor belts, salt and cement bags, etc. so it has led a hard life. It has performed quite well considering the abuse it has gone through. It doesn't take much to put an edge back on. The only issue I have with it is, though I don't have very large hands, I find that the handle is about 3/4" too short and a bit too rounded to be held and used comfortably.

My brother gave me this knife as a gift. I was eager to try it out. I shot mule deer buck and used the Roach belly to gut and skin the deer. In this price point you won’t find a knife this quality! Easy to resharpen and has great ergonomics for working on deer and fish. I highly recommend this knife. Thanks Cold Steel for another great knife at an affordable price!

I bought my second roach belly knife. I hate the name they gave this knife. They are hair shaving sharp and easy to keep sharp in the field. The handle is slippery and I find myself wishing for a guard to keep me from cutting myself. My first roach belly had a standard sheath which was a better sheath. My second knife came in a mova knockoff type which does not hold the knife well ( but it is easier to clean). So I ended up buying a sheath at bass pro to use instead. I love this knife though. It would make a great gift for a new hunter. I carry mine almost daily. I would buy another one if cold steel makes one a little larger. It would be a no brained to compete against the bench made meat crafter. DONT change the blade to make it a wood splitter! The blade is crazy sharp and easy to maintain but still stiff and sturdy. It’s a great value overall!

This is my go to tool around the farm. I've used it for chicken, turkey, rabbit, pig, sheep, and deer. It does everything. Dispatch, gut, skin, and even most of the butchering on the block. I bought a commercial series butcher knife for the last step, and i prefer to use my Roach belly.

Best knife I've ever had, love it!! Use it not only for camping but trips in the car, on a picnic, snack on a trip. I love it, wish I'd gotten it a long time ago.

I have had this knife for several years now. When our family goes fishing, I set up a gutting station and do all the gutting. I have gutted several hundred fish with my Roach Belly and seldom if ever have to hone it while on a trip. I have also used this blade for food preparation, and it is excellent. I have given this blade as a gift to several people. My little brother uses the buttonhole clip on the back of the belt clip to secure the sheath to his overall shoulder strap. I prefer a flexible belt loop so will probably remove and replace the loop on mine with leather. However, I would recommend this knife to any and everyone who enjoys a light weight, sharp, functional and well-made knife that can be easily used as an EDC.

This knife slices very well, and the blade geometry and overall design is surprisingly suitable to a lot of different jobs. I mostly use it for food prep since the blade stock is thinner than my other knives. The sheath fits badly. Can’t even hold the knife at all.

One of the most useful utility knives you can buy. I own several. Used on deer, ranch, and workshop. Dulls easy, sharpens up quickly. My family does not cherish a great blade so they get these for chores. One I found a year after lost in field, cleaned it, taped the chewed on handle And gave it back to kid who “forgot” it. Will buy more in this series.
