9 of 9 Remington Thunderceptor HT Air Rifle, 3-9x50 Scope Reviews
First time airgunner, but have shot at one time or another, 22' s , shotguns, dad's 6mm rifle, this thing is sick! shoot with long time airgunner, and not even one tin of pellets fired through this beast, I'm like, gods opened up and created this, this beast! more than I expected, Remington hats off, Thunderceptor .22, still taming it, but nice groups at 30 and hitting beer bottles at 40, can only get better!
Things I Would Have Changedwee bit heavy, but you can deal with that, put different scope on,
What Others Should Knowthis is top end power, from 30 to 40, for me, aiming dead on, hitting it, looking for right pellet to put me in the , I GOT THIS! , going to try H&N Field Trophy .22, been using Premier hollowpoints,
The weight of the gun, the fluted style barrel shroud, the power, the picatinny scope mount and the tactical appearance.
Things I Would Have ChangedThe scope is junk! I never even mounted mine. I upgraded to a 6-24x 50 mil-dot reticle with an adjustable objective.
What Others Should KnowThis is a good gun but there is several things you can do to make it an excellent shooter. I did the following 1) upgrade the trigger to a CDT GRT-III, 2) replaced all three of the Phillip head stock screws with Allen head bolts, this makes it much easier to tighten, 3) lock-tite (Blue) all stock screws, 4) Upgrade the scope 5) Keep the picatinny scope rail and replace the stock one piece scope rings with UTG 1" Max Strength Quick Lock Rings, 6 Hex Screws Per Ring Cap, 6) Fill the hollow stock with expandable foam, 7) mount dual picatinny rails on both sides of the forward grip on the stock and use split bipods. This made the gun a very accurate and fun shooter. The cocking effort is not difficult, I could shoot this all day. The long barrel gives you plenty of leverage. You can get the foam and the metric Allen bolts at your local hardware store. PA has the scope rings.
After a rough start, this gun has proven to be a very solid and accurate gun. I tested many types of pellets and it prefers heavy, round nosed ones as opposed to wadcutter, hollow point or the ones with the pointed plastic inserts. I am shooting out to 60 yards or so and am having a great time with this gun. It's nice and heavy, which I like for bench shooting. Can't imagine hunting with it, but I prefer target shooting anyway. The pistol grip and cheek piece are very effective at precision shooting as is the flat bottomed forearm.
Things I Would Have ChangedWhile the Remington mounts were very solid, the scope itself was next to useless. Either the reticle was in focus or the target was. Never both at the same time. I purchased a new one and used the Remington mounts. They were superior to the ones that came with the new scope (Centerpoint). The trigger. Truly the hardest trigger I've ever pulled! There are grooves cut into it that caused my trigger finger to hurt quite a bit after 5 shots or more. Some shrink tubing over the trigger fixed that up, and after several hundred rounds, it is evolving into a consistent and manageable break. Adding an adjustable trigger stop would help quite a bit when trigger weight is this high. There is a lot of travel after the break and the gun can move quite a bit before the trigger hits its current stop.
What Others Should KnowThis rifle seems to prefer heavy (10gr. or so), round nosed pellets. Both lead, and copper coated pellets work well but the copper coated ones require a lot of seating force. When the gun first arrived, I was shocked and dismayed at the erratic groups it was shooting, but this was with lightweight, wadcutter, pistol pellets that work really well in my Hatsan 25. Once I tried eight or ten kinds of pellets, I settled on Barracuda Power, JSB Diablo Exact heavy, Sig Saur Wraith, and Air Arms Field Heavy. These are all 10+ grains and are domed or round nosed.
This gun is a super value, but will take a good number of rounds before you start to see what it can really do.
Look, Feel, Weight even though people say it heavy, I don't feel it is, Quality, Power, Accuracy, on and on.
Things I Would Have ChangedNothing
What Others Should KnowHonestly, call me crazy...but this is one of the best high power airguns I've owned. I've had Diana 50 series, Beeman HW's, R's etc. To be honest, I like this much better than my two Beeman R-1's that I have too keep hearing the annoying twang spring noise, and trigger guard that keeps getting loose. Remington has done a perfect job creating this gun. Its has insane amount of power! Haven't done an extensive chrony but with one shot out of the box it registered 940 fps with 14.3 gr Benjamin Hollow points. This is my opinion, but I think its one of the best looking break barrels out there. People say its similar to Gamo, no way! Gamo looks something like a sports car / a gun. This is like a fighter jet.
Very powerful and accurate
Things I Would Have ChangedI have the 22 cal. And it is not back yard friendly mine is almost as loud as a 22 cal. powder burner. I have shot over 700 14.3 cro, Sgtsman lead pellets through the rifle.
What Others Should KnowWhen I purchased the rifle it stated on the box that it came in that it came with a 3-9x50 mil-dot scope, but mine did not have the mil-dots . I contacted remington and was told that my rifle did not come with a scope with mil-dots . I explained to them that it was written on the box that it was supposed to have a mil-dot scope inside . I never received the scope with the mil-dots .
Good Solid air rifle I have 177 cal
Things I Would Have ChangedNot much
What Others Should KnowHave fun shooting
I like a heavier rifle...that doesn't bother me. Feels good shouldered even though it is a pretty long air rifle. It will take some adult strength to cock the Remington, but again that doesn't detract me from purchasing an air rifle. I was shooting it at 13 yards and was getting very to tight groups with CP pellets. Outside I was out to about 22 yards and was pleased with those groups as well. I haven't even come close to breaking it in yet...so really pleased to this point. The scope is acceptable no doubt. It brings in a lot of ambient light for a decent view of your intended target.
Things I Would Have ChangedIf it were possible to knock off an inch or two of overall length that would be terrific. The trigger could he better...but not really worth complaining over....it is sufficient.
What Others Should KnowThis really is a decent rifle....has some power for sure. I haven't put it through my chronograph but plan to. I think it may be a little pricey...but not by much, maybe 15 to 20 bucks.
For such a big rifle it is very quiet .22. Accuracy and very hard hitting. Stock/butt shape, 50mm scope, decent trigger pull can adjust to liking.
Things I Would Have ChangedLighten by a couple lbs., include a scope shade.
What Others Should KnowThis is a very big, long, heavy, well built rifle. In .22 the power is second to none that I own in .22 cal. Accurately shoots pellets in the 14 plus gr. for excellent performance. RWS Superdomes, H&N Hunters and Gamo Rockets perform very well putting a nice size hole and completely devastating targets (pests) at ranges 20-50 yds. I did add a 6-24x50 scope with sun shade for performance and looks. This rifle does not play. To get the job done. . . .I reach for this heavy load often, this thing delivers. . . .
