10 of 17 Hatsan 85 Sniper Vortex Air Rifle Reviews
Everything.. Great gun. 500 rounds done and as good now as it was on the first few shots..
Things I Would Have ChangedThis gun needs to loose the 11mm dovetail and have a regular weaver/picattiny dovetails..!! The better scopes mount to the larger dovetails.
What Others Should KnowI mounted a UTG 3-9X40 Hunting scope to my Hatsan 85 and there is a very important note that all 85 users should know. If you plan to mount a better scope that that has larger weaver/picatinny dovetails, you will need to seek out a suitable Dovetail to picatinny rail adapter. But please know this... I've found that many adapters that fit into the bottom of scope mounts have "flat" bottoms and because of the rounded barrel and depth of the dovetails on the 85, the adapter will rest on the top of the barrel and not reach the dovetail groves..!!! In my case I had to file out the bottom of the adapters and create a rounded depression on both so the mount would fit the curvature of the barrel.. Once that was done the scope mounted cleanly to the 85's groves.
It is substantial. Initial pellet release is quieter than my Striker 1000s. Had Pyramydair put a better scope on it, which is really nice. I like the larger caliber. Trigger adjusted nicely.
Things I Would Have ChangedIt says it's a Vortex rifle. But the slam-SPROING! at the end sounds like some kind of spring. So obnoxious that I seldom shoot it. It just sits in the case. I'd rather shoot the Striker, which is a springer, but doesn't make the SPROING!
What Others Should KnowI probably should have sent it in to the factory right after I got it ... along with the bill of sale and they would have fixed it for free. Too late now (1 year limit). My bad
General appareance, stock, weigth, trigger, silencer.
Things I Would Have ChangedPower is not the advertised by the manufacturer or by professionals reviews. I measured 3 different pellets .22 caliber at sea level, sunny day no wind, 10 shots each. Results was: Crosman Premier HP 14.3 gr. 705 FPS. Crosman Destroyer 14.3 gr. 710 FPS. H&N Spitzkugel 16.05 gr. 653 FPS. This number are similar to the measured in another review by William. No 800 or 765 FPS. My gun was from Hatsan USA but not from Pyramydair.
What Others Should KnowThe feel of the rifle is solid and much better than my previous Gamo Big Cat also in .22 caliber. I change the scope for the Hammer 3-9X40AO with Leapers Accushot 1 pc. mount high profile, and can hit pidgeons at 55 yards very easy. I could not talk about the Optima scope because I never use it, but the included rings do not has pin stop and has only 2 screw each.
accuracy, build quality, quiet, powerful, light weight, fast shipping and sold by pyramid air
Things I Would Have Changedpicatiny rail , easier cocking if possible
What Others Should Knowvery accurate!!! very powerful!!! very impressed!!! very hard to cock!!! using a removable 20 inch extender for easier cocking, originally made for 125 sniper[fits both 85 and 125] I don't like china air guns, I like german air guns, this hatsan is made in turkey with some german parts and it shows, turkey has along history of buying german rifles and then reproducing them [E.g. mauser] that said the quality is not as good as beeman or weihrauch but for the price its a very good deal, got the 85 in .22 and the 125 in .25, like both of them.
finish,feel handling
Things I Would Have ChangedTrigger sucks! After getting a charliedatuna trigger I am getting >1"groups at 35yds with H&N field target trophy pellets
What Others Should KnowGreat gun for money except trigger. Too bad Stoeger makes such a good gun with such a lousy trigger
the trigger is very smooth and needed no adjustments right out of the box. the Vortex ram does an excellent job of pushing the Crosman 14.3 pellet out to 50yards with no problem. the Truglo open sights are very easy to use.
Things I Would Have Changedwould have liked to seen a picatinny rail instead of the dovetail
What Others Should Knowthe plastic used seems thin and cheap. the buttend has a hollow sound in it. when adding the included spacers you need to buy longer screws as the ones that are in it are to short. it loves the Crosman Premier pellets (14.3).this is not a little kids toy. does take some effort to cock it but I already knew this when I bought it. I set up a 1" phone book 40yards out and the pellet blows right through it. would have gave 5 stars on all but the plastic brings it down to 4 stars.
Powerful! Well-constructed, good trigger, fiber optic sites are great, sling mounts are a nice feature not found on many air rifles, NOT made in China and fairly quiet
Things I Would Have ChangedOffer with a weaver optics rail similar to what is available on the Hatsan Mod. 125, I also like the safety better on the Hatsan Mod. 95. Maybe leave off the scope and bipod and reduce the price a bit--they are not on the same level as the rifle. But overall very little I would realistically want to change. Its a great rifle for the money
What Others Should KnowHatsan may not have the popularity that Gamo or Crosman have in the U.S. but they make some great rifles. The Sniper 85 vortex is my 2nd Hatsan rifle and I am looking to buy another sometime in the future - the Hatsan model 125 Sniper Vortex. If you're looking for a good quality air rifle take a look at what Hatsan has to offer. I have also owned a Bengamin NP XL and its a great rifle too. However, I consider the 85 Sniper Vortex to be very comparable to the NP XL for a better price point. I like how Hatsan states the potential velocity of their rifles using lead pellets instead of alloy because that's what most people actually use. I have probably put 1,200-1,400 rounds through it but I have not mounted a scope to it yet. I've been very content with shooting with fiber optic sites. I mostly use Crosman Premier Domed, 14.3gr pellets and the results have been good. Its gets 5 stars all around
Everything! This is my third .25 cal rifle and am impressed all around. Right out of the box, with stock sights, the accuracy is unreal at 30-35 yards. Mounted and zeroed the scope in under ten shots. For a model that claims to max at 650 fps, in this caliber, it still packs a punch. Very suitable for small game hunting. The trigger is an absolute dream! With only minor adjustments, it it set exactly how I prefer. The break action on the barrel is smooth and surprisingly (to me) was not very hard at all to fully cock. The fact that it is not a spring and performs better than one just tops it off. Overall the rifle has a good feel to it, is highly addictive to shoot, and would definitely purchase again.
Things I Would Have ChangedI have read and heard the complaints about the scope, mounts, sling, and bi-pod. I'm not too concerned about any of that, more so the rifle itself. However, the scope (albeit not top of the line) works just fine and have had no problems after a tin and a half of pellets. No broken rings or damage to the scope. The bi-pod and sling, again is not top of the line, but do exactly what they should. For the rifle, I would not make any changes.
What Others Should KnowIf you are on Pyramid Air's website and wondering if they are a reputable business or are hesitant to order from them, don't worry! My first purchase with Pyramid Air dates back probably close to ten years now. I was having trouble deciding on a particular model to buy and ended up speaking to the owner himself. Joshua spent a considerable amount of time on the phone helping with my purchase. You will not find the great level of customer service you do at Pyramid anywhere else. Always friendly, always helpful, and always willing to go the extra mile. Throw in fair pricing, super speed order processing and shipping.. What is there to question? Repeat, loyal, extremely happy customer here. Keep up the great work and thank you!
This Gun is Awesome. In my opinion if you ahve a budget of 200 hundred max you should open it up just a little more but that just me. The quattro trigger is the best out of the box compared to the to6...or others..way better than the standard crosman. The velocity is also nice. My gun is in .177 cal. Im using JSB Exact Monsters .177 grns and there shooting tthem with 17fpe. Thats hard for a .177 gun. I also shoot open sights as I have not decided what scope to mount on this gun. But the groups are also great. @ 20 yards my groups are 1/4-1/2" which is good enough for me.
Things I Would Have ChangedId take the bipod off..maybe it wont be a sniper anymore. but seriously i would and add the cost difference to make the 3-9x32 scope AO.
What Others Should KnowDont use light pellets. I mean begin to start testing something that weighs at least 9 grns. I started at 10 and tried to find the best.

Well made not as heavy as the 125 sniper. Good power able to reach out to 35, 40 yards no problem. Also not as loud as the 125. Then again I love all my Hatsan rifles. Edge in. 25, 125 spring version, and my latest purchase Bullboss in. 25.
Things I Would Have ChangedHatsan guns in general are heavier than, your Gamo's, Crosman's, Benjamin's, and other comparable class airguns. Other than the weight I only have good things to say about the 85 sniper.
What Others Should KnowFor the price it's hard to beat, the 85 sniper is so much fun to shoot. Definitely would recommend this rifle, also would recommend purchasing from pyramidair.
