Overall quality of construction. Stats on paper.

For me it was not a good gun for long distance target shooting. Shot cycle was too violent. I could not get good distance or accuracy with 15, 18, or 20 grain high quality pellets. This gun seems to be much more geared to sub 50 yard hunting. It's pretty loud too.

See above.

Powerful, accurate up to 50 yards, and fun to shoot from a bench.

Scope is not adequate, will not hold zero.

The rifle is big, but powerful. I purchased mine directly through Ruger, I should have purchased mine through Pyramyd Air, because they have a better price for the rifle. I highly recommend purchasing the Air Venturi tune kit kit offered by Pyramyd Air, to replace/shim the breech seal. It will help improve power, and accuracy. The included scope is not adequate for the rifle, and will not hold zero. I upgraded to a Leapers UTG SWAT 3-12x44 with etched glass, it holds zero well on this rifle. Rifle prefers semi heavier pellets (17-21 grains), and easily punches through 1/2" pine boards at 25 yards. I have shot a couple thousand rounds through mine so far, and so far so good.

I am very pleased with the.177 I purchased. It is accurate and powerful. Also a tight group at 59 yards about two inches. The rating is for the rifle only. The scope gets a zero.

the scope broke 54 weeks after purchase so I would not recommend the combo.

I use the tomahawk Gamo pellets in everything

Power and velocity capabilities depending on grainage of .177 pellet.

Scope.

Due to the high velocity capabilities of this beast, it allows you to hit targets at greater distances. I changed scope from a capable 9X32 to a more higher range capable CVLife3-9X40 parallax from AmazonPrime. I retested this .177 air rifle shooting the Crosman Premier Piranha 10.5 grain sawtooth Hollow Point. The rifle was previously cited in for the 11.57 grain Pointed Beeman/Silver Arrow/H&N Sport #46177, which this rifle shot very accurate. It took me 7 shots to cite this in on a 2 inch target at 80 feet at 50 feet above sea level. Sunny skies with 82 degree temperature with 73% humidity. My next 5 shots hit the 2 inch target stuck. onto a box, missing the center bullseye by no more than a half inch. That accuracy was equal to the Beeman/H&N Sport. Chronograph result was: 888, 890, 891, 886, & 877, averaging 886.4 fps. This same pellet had an average velocity of 911 fps in 55 degreeez on 1/1/2019. 25 degree difference. I recommend this air rifle. Get chronograph. Woodys World.

To answer your question, yes. https://www.pyramydair.com/blog/2008/02/shooting-airguns-at-altitude/ . I lived at 6800 ft altitude and all of my springers were lower than what other people were reporting and I had to add one additional pump to my benji to get what others were publishing.

John Sep 14, 2019

I suppose the higher velocity in the colder air is due to it being denser. This raises a question I've had for some time. If I go up a 10,000 ft. mountain, the air density is going to be much less than at 50 ft. above sea level. This creates a problem for High Powered Springers in that there isn't enough air in the cylinder to keep the seal/piston from bottoming out Similar to what happens when firing without a pellet.

Well made with look and feel of actual firearm,a little on the heavy side. Slight recoil when firing and hard hitting, you will not see the projectile in flight as you can in lower powered rifles. This rifle is loud compared to say a C02 or pump air rifle but there's a lot fps and power so its to be expected. Accurate with good groups using Ruger Superpoint pellets once you zero in the sites and scope. Dropped a woodchuck with no problem from 75 feet.

If there was a way to make it lighter and maybe if they could come up with a sound damper so it has a little more stealth,

Use good quality ammo, clean it before using for better accuracy.

John Feb 12, 2019

This is a high powered hunting breakbarrel air rifle. I know you know that. A CO2 or pump air rifle is not even close in power compared to this one. At the greater velocity that this shoots pellets it’s going to be loud. You are probably not going to drop that woodchuck as easily as you do with this Ruger Air Magnum. Get a chronograph and you will know. I can assume that you Ruger Air Magnum is .177 because you are comparing it it a CO2 or Pump air rifle. If so, use .177 pellets, such as 10.5 grain Ultra Magnum Premiers. Get a chronograph. Woodys World.

Power for the price.

I did change from the Ruger 4X32 scope to a 3-9X40. The power and velocity dictated I needed a higher power scope for longer distance shots.

I chronographed four different .22 pellets in 8 shot groups. I shot the Crosman Premier 9.50 grain SSP PBA in 8 shots, averaging 1114 fps in 68 degrees.. The RWS Hobby 11.90 grain lead in 8 shot groups, averaged 952 fps in 68 degrees. The third pellet shot, the Crosman Premier Ultra Magnum Dome 14.30 grain, averaged 911 fps in 46 degrees. The fourth pellet was the Crosman Premier Destroyer 14.30 grain, averaged 935 fps in 45 degrees. There are a few others that I have that will fly in excess of 900 fps. Now if you use pellets 15.00 grains and heavier, my chronograph readings were less than 900 fps. Hot and cold outdoor temperatures will increase or decrease fps somewhat. Get a chronograph and document your pellets in a logbook, including weather temperatures. I log all my pellets, 29/.177 grains and 31/.22 grains in all four seasons and compare the fps in those seasons temps ranging cold to hot. Get a chronograph. Woodys World.

This review, which is mine, was shot and tested over a chronograph at an altitude that is 400 or so feet above sea level. Woodys World.

The above air rifle with pellet test results were shot on my home property in Maryland that is located at an altitude that is 400 feet above sea level. Woodys World.

John Jun 15, 2018

I live in Maryland and I shoot 12 months out of the year, 4-5 days a week, with 2 or 3 of my 10 breakbarrel air riflesI a day, shooting 20-30 pellets each at targets 80-90 feet away. I will shoot from my garage if it is raining or snowing. I don’t shoot if it too windy. Woody’s World.

John Jun 11, 2018

Tim, what is a standard weight pellet? And also, what is standard deviation? Don’t get them confused, ok. Woody’s World.

John Jun 06, 2018

A flat match pellet is not known to be a very high velocity pellet. It is designed for accuracy in competition. Read what you claim you read about losing 17 fps, I don’t see it. Read carefully. I have 3 air rifles that are .22 caliber. They are the .22 Benjamin Summit NP2, the .22 Octane Umarex, and the .22 Ruger Air Magnum. I also have 8 air rifles that are .177 caliber. I shoot 4-5 days a week, winter, spring, summer, and fall, except in the rain. I do not shoot indoors or short 10 yard target shooting. My minimum and normal target shooting is 80-90 foot distance at 2-3 inch targets. My longest target distance is 120 feet, which is limited to that by woods on my 3 acre property. Use your chronograph. Woody’s World.

John Jun 06, 2018

No one really cares what you have a hard time believing, you have a chronograph, you can run the fps test yourself, using the same pellets. Also take consideration in the weather temperatures. All reviews I read that tested the RWS Hobby 11.9 grain were very similar in fps as mine using the same air rifles. The RWS Hobby 11.9 grain has a very good deviation. Also consider that it is a flat head pellet.

Tim May 23, 2018

I have a hard time believing you only lost 17 fps going from 11.9 gr pellets to 14.3... ummm yeah that kind of discredits everything else you say. I have a chrono and lots of .22 air rifles and typically lose 90-100 fps going from the RWS Hobby's @ 11.9 grains to standard weight pellets.

John Mar 23, 2018

I also have the .177 caliber version. Both versions have heavy recoil. I use the Infantry Hold firmly when holding these air rifles into my shoulder to control and absorb the recoil. This air rifle may not be for everyone because of its recoil, which may/will hamper accuracy. Any .177 caliber pellet below 9.50 grains will fly proportionately in excess of 1000 fps out to 1500 fps for the Crosman 4.00 grain PBA, depending on the temperature. The same with the .22 caliber PBA 9.00 grain pellets, they will approach 1200 fps, depending on temperatures. I do not recommend PBA pellets, they could damage your air rifles piston. For both air rifles I use pellets that give me 800 to 1000 fps, my preference. In my shooting I find this air rifle, in both calibers, very accurate when shooting at 3 inch targets 80-90 feet away, the distance which I have calibrated the scopes for. Beyond that I make sight adjustments by using the mildots. Get a chronograph. Woody’s World.

First let me tell you, you will not achieve anywhere near 1200 FPS! I do not know where they pull these numbers from but mine only chronied at 817 FPS, a far cry from 1200! Other than that a great, accurate hard hitting gun!

Can we get these manufacturers to stop lying about the FPS of these airguns!?

John Jul 07, 2018

I have .22 Ruger Air Magnum. I chronographed the 9.50 grain Crosman SSP PBA, 5 shot group: 1122, 1111, 1115, 1114, 1109 fps. Average of 1114 fps in 68 degree weather. 14.3 grain Crosman Ultra Magnum, 5 shot group: 923, 922,908, 912, 925 fps. Average of 918 fps in 68 degree weather. 8.18 grain Winchester Max Velocity PBA, 5 shot group: 1136, 1138, 1128, 1139, 1134 fps. Averaging 1135 fps in 82 degree weather. Is that close enough. You did not say which pellet and what the grain weight was.

John Mar 12, 2018

Take and chronograph several pellets from 9.50 grains thru 18.00 grains and you record them, see what fps readings you will get. Pellets of a lighter grain weight will be faster/higher fps than the heavier ones. That is why pellets come in a lot of different weights. That is true with any ballistic projectile. Woodys World.

See review below.

See below.

This is in addition to the review that is before the addendum to it. Once I concentrated on proper eye relief when looking thru that scope, with the power at 6X, accuracy totally improved. I did use my MTM Case-Gard Predator Shooting Rest, which was very helpful. I do recommend all equipment used during this review. I was concentrating on breathing, hold, sight alignment, and trigger squeeze. I then thought about eye relief distance when looking thru the scope, it made a big difference. Hope this will help you.
