Weight, accuracy.

Make an adult size gun.

Very accurate. I got this for CMP shooting and it was exactly what I needed. The low velocity kept the noise down for indoor shooting without sacrificing any accuracy. Great for young shooters as well since it is small framed and light weight. Also the peep sights are very crisp and easy to adjust.

Lighter trigger

Upon arrival, fired several Beeman quick cleaning pellets through the bore. At 10 Meters off a bench, fired 3 (three) pellets in a group that would be covered with a Quarter. After firing a couple more Beeman cleaning pellets, I fired for a group. Fired 5 rounds that could be covered with a Nickle. After 30 total pellets, 5 round group could be covered with a dime. All other pellets were hitting 10s and 9s. Targets were NRA AR-5/10, 10 Meter targets.

Early on, the trigger was dodgy, and very rough. It did smooth out after a while. Still not very smooth, breaking at varying trigger pull pressures. The front sight Globes included with the M853, upon closer inspection, were very CRUDE in manufacture! Inside globe used for sight picture was NOT round, but kind of an oval bearing left and right. Immediately get rid of the front sight globes. Insert precision replacements. The included Globe front sights are CRUDE in manufacture. Use available information to clean up trigger action function.

Use Beeman or other quick cleaning pellets, firing them through bore PRIOR to firing Match Pellets. Seems there was much oil in bore and inside pump compression chamber.

Given the past history of the M853, and with the one I bought, I highly recommend this Air Rifle.

Being a former Marine, and later joining another Military branch, with which having been on their National Service Rifle Team, earning Bronze 6 point medal towards Distinguished, and before that involved in Army J.R.O.T.C. Small Bore Rifle Teams, I really like this Air Rifle.

this gun is very accurate. i shoot thumb tacks from 10m/33ft all the time. its the best air rifle you can get for the money. its a shame that there are not many other companies that make a rifle this good in this price range.

the trigger pull is heavy and not very smooth. it took me a little while to get used to the stiff trigger but when i did, it shot like a champ. there are a few trigger modifications that you can find online. i modified my trigger and it shoots much better

The rifle is accurate and overall finish is excellent. The buttplate extensions is a nice touch and we've used it often. The sights with inter-changable front lens worked really well.

The user's manual is very poorly written. I know most people just toss it, but for those of us who do read it, it's lacking in detail and poorly illustrated. Daisy's website is for marketing only and useless for after sale. The pellet loading area is poorly designed and make it very hard to load. An adjustable trigger would make the 853 a really fine competitution airgun.

PyramydAir didn't answer emails asking for help after the sale. If you're new to the 853, you'll need access to a good online forum.

This was fairly light weight and easy to handle. I shoot unsupported quad class and that mattered a lot. It was accurate after I zeroed in and I shot better this year than I ever have before.

The sling loosened up fairly easily during use.

This is a great rifle if you need a lighter weight gun.

Accuracy, ease of operation. Simple to pump and load, good functional safety. Very consistent, very accurate.

Pull length is too short, spacers don't fit profile of stock well, minor complaint... For the price, and for being billed as an introductory competition rifle (for youths, no less!) why did they engineer such an awful trigger/sear combination?? Too rough, too hard, too long.

Sights are decent, but plastic, so be careful with the rear sight assembly. Pump handle is metal, unlike plastic ones on Daisy's 22XT (though that is a fine rifle, too!) Not at all easy to take this apart, lots of little fiddly bits for looks.

Very simple to use, very reliable. This is my gun of choice for anyone who competes in 10 meter air rifle competitions. Gas powered rifles have a tendency to have mechanical errors, which can cause you to lose a competition. With the Avanti 853, you don't have to worry about anything.

Nothing. One pump, one shot, it's great.

This rifle will definately get you medals in a competition, but I wouldnt recommend it for shooting small game.
