Excellent ergonomics and balance, quality diopter sights, the trigger wears in to be fairly nice, easy cocking, very quiet, not very pellet sensitive, and quite accurate.
Things I would have changed:The flexible single-shot breech insert can be a bit fiddly until you poke it around to its correct position. Maybe a stiff insert would work better.
What others should know:The trigger is un-inspiring, but breaks in well and the whole package makes popping fallen acorns out to 15 meters seem almost easy.

Great value for a brginner's gun. Simple and easy to use. Decent sight, especially when one considers the cost.
Things I would have changed:A better trigger action. An adjustable stock. When mass produced, these should cost too much to add and for one I am willing to pay extra for them

Handling, Size, Power, superb recoil management. The peep sights are more than worth it. Overall, an excellent rifle for beginners, very handy and accurate enough - well worth the money.
Things I would have changed:A little more metal around the outer barrel area. Maybe a few more inserts for the foresight, which should accompany the package. Maybe some improvement in loading of single shots. The present housing, which is interchangeable can be a nuisance for those with non-dextrous fingers.
What others should know:Be very careful while cocking the rifle. If your finger gets caught below the under-lever, its pretty painful.

I bought this for my 12 year old son. This gun does require some strength to cock, he is pretty solid and can manage it well. It is a single pump gun and he can cock it all day long. One pump means very consistant power behind each shot, this gun does not let you down. It can group 1/2" at 20 yds pretty consistantly (scoped). This gun is well made, has a solid feel, is easy to shoot and it is accurate. It is everything I expected from this purchase. I would recommend it for anyone 12 and up. Buy it !
Things I would have changed:Nothing.
What others should know:I purchased this gun with the target sights thinking my 12 yr old would enjoy them, he did not. I instead put a scope on it and he can't get enough of it.
This gun is good for mid sized shooters, it would be too big and difficult for my 9 yr old boy to shoot, cock and handle by himself.

What others should know:Great rifle for the money. Again perfect for my basement range.

I really like the rifle. I had one like this before about 20 years ago. It only difference was it had a wooden stock, and that better target site. One of the features that I like about the Daisy 953 is the single pump feature. In addition, I really like the new open sites. They are Day-Glo green and the front one is Day-Glo red. It really makes it easy to get a good site picture. Now about the target site. First of all it is not a Daisy target site. It is a cheap Chinese knockoff and from what I can tell you must be made from lead. The rear sight alone weighs 8.3 ounces. That's a little over a half a pound. What I've done is purchase a four power Daisy scope that mounts nicely on the top of my Daisy 953. My recommendation is not to buy this package with the target scope, but purchase the Daisy 953 separately and either buy a Daisy target site or get a four power Daisy scope that has a weight of 3.1 ounces.
What others should know:The rifle gets 5 stars, while the target site gets 1 star. JMC

The rifle is good for the money. It will shoot 1/4 groups at 10 yes. The open sights good to use at 10 yds and adjust accurately.
Things I would have changed:Include several options for the front sight aperture. An adjustable rear stock to get the but in your shoulder when shooting offhand rather than having to jam the corner of the rear stock into you shoulder when shooting offhand. I plan on modifying this.
What others should know:Shot 200 rounds through it and it seemed to break in around 75 rounds. A more expensive rifle may have a better barrel, trigger act bit I feel for the money it is a very good rifle and fun to shoot.
