6 of 6 DPMS Classic A4 Nitro Piston Air Rifle Reviews
Really like the styling on the rifle power accuracy is very good power is great weight is about the same as my Bushmaster xm 15 a3 but I have the older version designated MTR77NP mine likes the crosman premier 7.4 grain power point pellets I removed the center point scope that came with it and replaced it with the carry handle with dual appature peep sights and Apost front sight I can pick off 12 ounce soda cans at 75 yards it's chronographed at 1140 fps with about 25fpe it's an all around great rifle for the price I have had it about 2 years and it gets better the more I shoot it
Things I Would Have ChangedIt could be a bit quieter tighten up the mag well it rattles a little change the safety from in front of the trigger make the trigger a little more adjustable and make some type of plugs to cover the screw holes in the butt stock and make the sling rings swivel the scope center point is ok but can be knocked out of adjustment after a few shots so in my opinion it's just a half average spotting scope that's why I put on the carry handle last thing the piccatinny rail up front on the barrel needs to be locked where it don't move I put a set screw in mine magazine could be a couple inches longer for a more authentic look
What Others Should KnowGreat rifle just try different pellet types and weights to find the ones your rifle likes best I tried about 20 different weights types and brands
Powerful and weight is similar to a real AR! I have owned mine for over 2 years and still love it! It came with a cheap scope but was able to dial it in okay! I bought a strap for it and the swivels work fine for me! It has been very accurate!
Things I Would Have ChangedThe trigger needs work but have seen a fix, a better scope and I think anyone would love this gun!
What Others Should KnowNothing, I love mine it looks and feels real cool!
I like the nitro piston powerplant..and combined with the M16, it is a terrific combo! I like that I have the non-gun permit version, which I rated for up to 500 fps/4.2 fpe and Crosman didn't just detuned to shoot 5 grain ammo up to 500 fps, like they generally do with inexpensive guns like the m4-177, instead they detuned to shoot 7.4 grain lead pellets around 500 fps! When I chronographed it with Crosman's 5.4 grain penetrators it shot as high as 620 fps!
Things I Would Have ChangedI would prefer a buttstock that was adjustable, like the M4, or at least make the classic M16 stock solid. It would be nice if the charging handle functioned as a manual safety, instead of just being a non functioning molded part.
What Others Should KnowShoot at least 300-500 rounds before casting judgment on the rifle, because mine got smoother as I used it and even the trigger seems to get more predictable.
It's accurate and, from a distance, looks like an AR. Has a picatinny mount. Good if you want to get experience shooting an AR without shooting an AR and don't want to fork out for the Benjamin Armada.
Things I Would Have ChangedJust about everything. - It looks and feels REALLY cheap. Everything on it (e.g. safety, ejection port, primer etc) is fake and non-functional. Up close it looks like a toy. - It's ridiculously hard to cock, and requires a "tap" as well to get the barrel going down. I need to put it on the ground and push down on it, leg cocking gets painful real quick. - It's loud. Like ringing in your ears, probably need hearing protection loud. - The trigger has such a long pull that sometimes I need to stop and take another breath. - The scope loses zero almost every time I shoot it.
What Others Should KnowIt looks cool and it's the only AR-style airgun that's affordable, but you're paying for looks only. What you get is the crappiest airgun experience you can imagine.
I'm going to be replacing mine with a Benjamin Trail or similar. I like the pistol grip, but I'm a basement shooter and I need something that won't get the neighbors calling the cops on me.
Ergonomics, accuracy, detail, ease of break-in are all among this model's outstanding attributes.
Things I Would Have ChangedFor he price, I'd change nothing. OK...maybe make the bottom sling fastener an *actual* moving sling swivel.
What Others Should KnowThe trigger may seem particularly hard to pull. It will seem to travel considerably before the sear engages.Oil the trigger as well as all other pivoting points. Using the artillery hold, consistent trigger control, breathing technique and pellets that the gun likes (mine favors Crosman Premier HP 7.9 grains) I can shoot bullseyes inside of a dime at 23 yards all day long, using the provided Center Point 4x32 scope. This is a wonderful shooter and realistic, as well!!

Looks, especially with a decent set up. Kind of bad ass. Very hard hitting, fun to shoot. An overall good, powerful gun that is a lot of fun to shoot.
Things I Would Have ChangedThe trigger! Very hard pull. I did adjust the length of the pull with the set screw ( 3 full turns) which helped a lot but the force needed to fire is still too hard and it's easy to pull off target. The cocking effort is a bit tough but would not exchange that for loss of power. Drop the included scope and replace it with standard front iron and removable carry handle sight carry handle. Let us choose our own optics. Quite it down. It's loud, very loud. A softer butt plate would have been nice.
What Others Should KnowI gave this gun 5 stars despite the flaws. For the money and for the sheer fun I love this thing. It shoots hard, has some kick, and hits hard. Scary looking from a bit of distance. I have shot numerous types of pellets. With the RWS Powerball and H&N Barracuda green alloy, I can easily and consistently punch through .020 steel plates.
The trigger is an issue. I've adjusted mine, helped but I am tempted to tear into it and modify with the bearing concept. (You-tube Crosman trigger fix). It is a tough gun to cock, but the power makes it tolerable and would not trade ease for power.
Due to the hard trigger pull I have a hard time grouping well. Aiming up and to the left though I can group well. I take that as an adjustment for my tendency to pull off due to the hard trigger.
I'm over 2000 rounds the feeling is that it is just getting broke in. Still playing with multple pellet types. It has no problem with heavier pellets. Pellets below 7g breaks the sound barrier and sounds like a 22.
