Description

While a gas-piston powerplant (also known as gas springs and gas rams) was originally touted as beneficial for airgun hunting since you could leave your gun cocked without fatiguing a metal spring, that's not the only reason you'd want one. Anyone who enjoys a smooth shooting gun needs to try out a gun with a gas-piston -- you'll be amazed by the smooth shooting characteristics and the lack of twang that you commonly find in springers. You won't ever want to go back to a gun with a metal spring!

This gun comes with a 3-year warranty. While most guns have a one-year warranty, Umarex goes the extra distance. Because some shooters are hesitant to try a technology new to them, they worry about support. The extra two years of warranty should ease your mind.

It looks and feels good. Recoil and sound are minimal.

The muzzle piece should be smaller. Folding the barrel to load is harder than it should be when you have to grab it 5 inches above the end The bipod is cool but the small plastic retainer broke the second time I used it. That part needs a lot of work. The scope it comes with is obviously inexpensive but I could not get it accurate enough to my liking.

Its heavy and looks great but the bipod is lousy. Swap the scope and it's fun to shoot.

Just about everything. The .177 Fuel I have is a nice gun, good for small game up to raccoon size. With H&N Sniper Medium pellets and a cheapo little Tasco 3-9x40 I am shooting a 1" pattern at 40 yards, and about 2" at 60 yards.

Something different for the bipod... stabilize it, stiffen it, just make it more solid.

Sixty yards seems to be about the max for this gun. H&N Sniper Magnums are too heavy, Sniper Lights don't carry any accuracy down range, but Sniper Mediums seem to be the honey spot.

I've been through at least a dozen different kinds of pellets in this gun. Crossman wadcutters have excellent accuracy at 20-30 yards, but don't carry enough energy to do anything beyond that. I have yet to find a pointed pellet that is accurate beyond 10 yards. Any round with a polymer jacket simply fouls the barrel. No accuracy to speak of. At this point H&N Sniper Mediums at 8.5 grains combined with their shape are accurate enough to pick the head off a wild turkey at 60 yards. Body shots will work, but the energy is low enough by that range you'll be chasing an injured animal for a bit.

I plan to buy this gun in .22 before long. I recommend either caliber.

DO NOT DIESEL THIS GUN!!!!!! I did it twice, both times by oiling the piston down the air chamber. Oil it ONLY FROM THE BACK. Remove the stock and oil the piston from the area of the cocking linkage. The damage was sudden and catastrophic. The gas cylinder sleeve has the end blown completely off of it, and that end jammed between the sleeve and the piston itself, badly scoring the sleeve. The piston seal is burned through just like an engine will burn through a blown head gasket. The carbon fouling from the dieseling, and metal shavings from the sleeve have seated in the piston seal, resulting in heavy scoring to the inside of the piston housing. After just about 4,000 rounds, this gun is a total write-off... Because of dieseling! Lesson learned. Don't make my mistakes. I'm getting the .22 version asap, and now I have trigger parts and a stock.

looks good

Make sure the air rifle is a little more accurate at 10 yd's.

Shot rifle at 10 yd's with scope that came with it. Shot around 8 " low with scope all the up. Bought new scope, UTG VARMINT/PREDATOR SPC-U394
AOIEW. Shot 4" low at 10 yd's turned all the way up. Don't know what to do now.

Mark Mar 15, 2018

At 10 yards brand new, with the supplied scope mount/rings and scope, I was 5 inches high. 1 1/4 turn to lower the impact point and the next 5 shots were within a nickel radius of dead center on my usual Gamo targets. I use 10 yards to sight in scopes, will move this out to 33 yards after it gets a full cleaning (only cleaned bore for quick check out) and enough shots to break everything in. .177 cal, Crosman destroyer pellets. Without AO or other focus control, I won't be able to use it to its full capacity with my astigmatism, but this rifle was purchased for my son to replace his Gamo that developed a habit of destroying scopes and became inaccurate overall when 6 months old.

Keith Jan 28, 2018

I too own the .22 cal. and have the same results as described above. This rifle is a very good example of Umarex rifles.

Keith Dec 19, 2017

I own the .22 cal. and mine shots very good patterns at 50 + yds. I have cleaned and tightened the screws like instructed have had no trouble with the one I have. I use Premier H/P and they seem to be the best.

Trigger, Thumb-hole stock, Fiber optic sights (love 'em), overall quality for this price range!

Not much, maybe the automatic safety, seems kinda close to the trigger, but I do have big hands.

Expected the rifle to work well with a heavier pellet. Barracuda 10.34's grouped nice at 30 yards, but 7.8 Gamo reds have a flatter trajectory and group just as well. Rifle is definitely hold sensitive. This thing eats scopes. On my third scope, a Monstrum 3-9x32 (same as a UTG BugBuster but without the sloppy mil-dot reticle) seems to handle this rifle nicely (400 pellets on this scope so far), the other two scopes lasted less than 100 pellets combined). I'm using see-thru rings so I can still use the open sights. Take your time and break this rifle in, it will settle down and be a pleasure to shoot. Very happy with this purchase and the way Pyramid Air handled the order, No Regrets!..Get one!

UPDATE: This has become one of my favorite break barrels. After about 3500+ pellets the piston seal went bye-bye. Umarex was Awesome! I had to pay return shipping, but after they received it I had a new Fuel within 3 days! No questions asked (I did include a detailed letter of the issue and the rifle was still under warranty). The bi-pods are kinda floppy, but I mostly shoot offhand. Replaced and shimmed the breech seal. I really enjoy the open sights and heft of this air rifle! Still have the same Monstrum 3-9x40AO scope and it has been flawless. Yes it's a bit hold sensitive, but once you master it this thing is great within 35 yards! Seems to prefer pellets in the 7.5 to 8.8 range. Cheap Crosman Destroyers work well for plinking. I do not regret buying this air rifle.

Accuracy, power, scope, design and gas piston its really cool

Pretty hard to cock and bit harder than I expected

I dont have this gun yet but I shot with this several times. Its verry good for small game hunting and you should buy .22 (bigger is better)

Well designed and sturdy body. I liked the open sights , a pre-requisite for any purchase i make. The scope was well designed. Not hard to cock. Good trigger pull. Powerful.

Nothing other than noise level.

I shoot a lot in my basement and this is not as quiet as i would like.

600fps with the JBS18 grain Jumbo Heavy pellet. Trigger is a little heavy, 5lbs by my scale but breaks clean with no creep. I can regularly shoot groups in the 1" range at 25yds with iron sights and the Jumbo Heavy. Four times that big with the scope. I'm primarily a center fire guy. I've heard that spring guns are hard on scopes. Of the 3 springer's I have, all shoot better with iron sights. All came with scopes from the factory. You would think a manufacture would not put a scope that would not hold up on their guns. It just makes them look bad. If I hadn't tested it without the scope I would have sent it back. Since I use it to stay in practice at a time that .22 rim fires are hard to get the fact that I don't have a scope is a minor concern.

Gun is a little heavy. I would like to see a reasonably priced air gun with a decent set of aperture sights.

Firm, Smooth, and Tight.

Nothing - except to detach the bi-pod if it is not useful. Did that on my .17, but going to keep it in this new .22

Was pleased w/ my 2 yr-old, 5,000 shot .17, so just got a new one in .22. Just as good. And scope is very good - just like on the .17.
And Kudos to Pyramyd in the delivery and packaging.
And just a technical point: I had to reverse my rings to get it on the paper in initial sighting. Saved me the "shimming" trial & error hassle.

JimPysht Jul 23, 2016

Notice that very few "Reviews" seem to be read. Why do we keep trying?

JimPysht May 20, 2016

Forgot to mention, and probably the most important of all (and somewhat countering my comment above) = "THE HOLD". The Thumb-Hole stock makes this possible. My "success" is in a firm-grip w/ trigger hand - Fingers and thumb web. Could never do this w/ a Traditional Pistol-Grip stock on several other Makes/Models I tried. Does not apply to PCP's. That is a whole 'nother ball game. My 4-star rating for "Accuracy" is my highest possible for a non-PCP. And re. ammo's (of 10 tried): The best is PolyMag, next the Crosman UltraMag (domed) - they both center. And a great grouper is the Diabolo 18.13 gr, but it centers 3" high and 1" left, so would have to re-sight for that one alone. Then a Mil-Dot scope would be useful (providing I could remember which is which at the time of use, and my game would patiently wait while I refer to my notes.

Price , scope , bipod, everything about this gun.

Only 2 things I would change are the trigger and the fiber optics in the front. Trigger has about a 4 pound pull but you get used to it needs an adjustment for that. The fiber optics in the front needs a shroud around it to keep from breaking it very easy to knock it up against something and break it.

I have only run about 150 shots through this gun so far and the accuracy is awesome. Set up targets at 10 - 20 - 30 - 40 - and 50 yards. After sighting in at 20 yds. I shot all 5 targets and the gun was right on at 10 - 20 - 30 yds and 1 1/2 in. low at 40 yds and 4 in. low at 50 yds . I would recommend this gun to anyone looking for a good gun at a very reasonable price. Go to( my air gun reviews ) on you tube and watch a full review of this gun or go to air gun web .com. You can't go wrong with this gun.

Rifle is a bit heavy . I hope silencer just needs to be broken in gun is loud . FedEx .ground is the worst ! My package went from Ohio to California. ( 20 miles from my home ) to. Alabama back to California where I went and picked it up 6 days after it was scheduled to be delivered. There was no explanation why my package was shipped across the country .
