An ax is one of the most important tools that you can have when spending time in the wilderness. Not only can it be used for chopping wood, but it can also be used as a weapon for self-defense or hunting. If you are planning on spending any time in the great outdoors, make sure to invest in a good quality ax.

Axes and hatchets come in many shapes, weights, sizes, styles, and materials. You want to pick one that fits well in your hands, is easy to swing, maintains a sharp edge, and is easily packed in your kit.

What's the difference between an ax and a hatchet?
The main difference between them is size and weight, but also in use. An ax is longer, heavier, and has a more robust head. A hatchet is small, light, has a narrow more tapered head, and can be easily used with one hand. An ax would be used to fell a tree, or chop up logs, while a hatchet would be used for smaller items, like stripping bark or branches from a log or making kindling.

If you're looking for a survival hatchet, you might consider a tomahawk. This is a good multi-use type of hatchet that is smaller, lighter, and sharper than its cousin, packs easily into a belt case or rucksack loop, and serves as both tool and weapon.

Depending on your needs, you'll want to choose between a hatchet or an ax. A hatchet will work better for smaller jobs needed around the campsite. From clearing a path to chopping up gathered wood, a hatchet gets the job done quickly and efficiently. But if you need to do more heavy-duty jobs, like chopping down trees or breaking through ice, an ax will be better up to the task.
