What Is An Arrow Nock?
A nock is the slotted plastic or composite piece at the very back of an arrow that attaches to the bowstring. It is important because it aids in proper alignment of the arrow before it is released and helps transfer energy cleanly from the string when it is released.
There are many examples, but some common types are:
- Press-fit nocks -- fit tightly into the shaft without glue
- Pin nocks -- fit over a pin bushing to help protect the shaft and accuracy
- Out-nocks -- fit around the outside of a few types of arrow shafts
- Glue-on nocks -- traditional style that is used on some wooden or aluminum arrows
Why You Need to Think About Nocks
When you choose an arrow nock, you will be factoring a few things:
- String fit-- a good fit will help for a clean release without drag or loose contact
- Arrow alignment-- a proper nock will help with flight and grouping
- Safety-- good nocks will help minimize the possibility of dry firing or misaligning the nock with the arrow
- Durability-- any quality nock should last many uses on the string
Any good bow, whether it's a compound or traditional recurve, will attain a consistent and predictable flight for your arrows when all is well matched.
Choosing the Right Nocks
When picking nocks, make sure they are matched to:
- The diameter and brand of your arrow shaft
- The size and material of your string
- Your bow style and draw weight
- Your style of shooting (target, hunting, 3D, or traditional archery)
Whether you are replacing broken nocks or setting up a new system, be sure to check compatibility so that the fit is snug and secure. If you have any questions or need assistance, our Ambassadors are ready to help.
