Best Air Rifles

Air rifles are basically any rifle that takes the very element that surrounds us, air, and compresses it to create enough pressure to send projectiles down range. The type of air rifles are almost endless, from break-barrels to pneumatic pumps, to pre-charged pneumatics, also known as pcps.

Air rifles have been around for hundreds of years, Lewis and Clark carried one on their expedition in 1804. That wasn't the first one, the very first one was made around 1580, it was finicky and cumbersome. Bartolomio Girandoni improved on the original and it's known as the .46 caliber Girandoni.

The uses for air-powered rifles are innumerable. For example they are used for fun backyard shooting, to teach a child responsibility and safety at home or in many well known organizations and schools, competitions and hunting.

Whether you're looking for a way to get more trigger time to improve your shooting skills, or you have bigger plans in mind, I can almost promise you there is a rifle that fits your needs. Maybe one of the following rifles from our top ten will be just the one.

Air rifles are perfect for:

  • Bringing family and friends together for some fun backyard plinking.
  • Practical practice or training applications for all shooters.
  • Pesting, small and big game hunting, caliber and energy dependant.

With hundreds of options, narrowing down our top picks is challenging, but here is where we would start.

Common Questions

What type of air rifle is good for beginners?

You could find a great beginner option in either a break barrel or a pcp rifle. A great rifle for beginners would offer ease of operation and minimal adjustments. They are more likely to enjoy the sport if it's not a fight to get good results.

If we were to recommend a pre-charged pneumatic rifle the requirement would be a smooth cocking experience, trigger pull, and of course the ability to accomplish great accuracy, like you would find with the Benjamin Marauder.

If we were to recommend a break barrel, the ask is not much different; a smooth cocking experience, trigger pull and the ability to accomplish great accuracy like what you would find with the Beeman R9.

When introducing someone to the sport, keep in mind success brings joy, a joy that people will want to experience repetitively. By choosing the appropriate rifle, you're setting them up for success.

Are air rifles hard to maintain?

No, they are not hard to maintain, but I guess that is dependent upon who you ask. They require occasional barrel cleanings. How often is dependent on multiple aspects. Like how often you shoot, the type of barrel, type of ammunition, and even your environment.

The better you care for your rifles the easier they'll be to maintain. If you don't keep them in a suitable environment like a temperature-controlled building where the temperature's won't fluctuate and cause moisture build up, or an extremely dry environment that would cause o rings to become brittle and break, then maintenance could become hard.

It's a bottom line with most everything the better you take care of it, the better it will take care of you. Be sure to read the manual and follow the maintenance guide included for the best results from your gear.

How does an air rifle work?

All air rifles have at least one thing in common, and that is they all have an air reservoir. The action of the operator, depending upon what type of air-powered rifle it is, fills that reservoir with high-pressured air.

A spring-powered rifle uses a spring piston pump and a compression chamber. In the compression chamber, the spring is compressed when the shooter cocks the gun, and the rear piston engages the sear. When the trigger is pulled, the sear is disengaged, and the compressed spring is released and pushes air through the pump cylinder and to the pellet.

A gas piston air rifle is similar to a spring piston air rifle, but instead of the compressed spring, it has a nitro piston, and when the gun is cocked, the gas inside the cylinder continues to compress. When the trigger is pulled, the air is released and again pushes the pellet down range.

With a pneumatic pump gun, the pumping action pushes the high-pressure air into the reservoir; when the trigger is pulled, the air is released through the valves to push the pellet down range. Some require one pump, while others require multiple to get the desired velocity.

A pre-charged pneumatic is very different, first, you must fill the air reservoir from an external high-pressure air source. Once the air reservoir is full, when the gun is cocked, and the trigger is engaged, the hammer is released. The hammer strikes the release valve, which releases air through the valves and into the chamber to push the ammunition down range.
