Description

Massive power! Isn't that the No. 1 reason you buy a big bore air rifle? That's what you'll get with the Hatsan BT Big Bore Carnivore.

Lots of manufacturers make big bore rifles, but many of them are single-shots. But the Carnivore is a repeater. And a muffled one at that! This monster comes with an integral silencer that shuts down the report by a whopping 50%. You get power, quiet and multiple shots.

While you can plink all day with this fun gun, you probably want to do some hunting. Foot-pounds will vary by the grain weight of your projectile. However, Hatsan has stated you should get about 75 ft-lbs. of energy with the .30-caliber gun and 95 ft-lbs. with the .357-caliber gun. That gives you a good amount of power to take animals at longer distances or some larger critters at closer distances. So, if you have some pests you want to clear out but can't get close enough to use your smallbore rifles, then bring out the big guns and show 'em what the Carnivore is all about!

The Air Venturi 118-grain and 127-grain pellets are too long for the 9mm/.357 cal. magazine. Do not try them in this rifle. The Air Venturi 95-grain and 115-grain hollowpoint pellets and the 105-grain flat point pellets fit the magazine.

Accuracy is really good. and the gun looks good. Adjustable trigger is a big plus

The baffle system it does keep the gun quiet. But I had some issues with mine effecting the accuracy.

If the gun is not shooting accurate, try taking the baffles out and leave the muzzle cap off and see if accuracy improves then you will know what the problem is btw mine shoots 3/4 inch groups at 55 yards using JSB 81 grain pellets with the baffles out

I knew these rifles were around. I have a heavily tuned Recluse .357, tuned by Will Piatt. RIP Will. But I wanted something a little more tamed, polite? My son in law bought an FX MK3. I saw the FX Crown made 90 fpe and 955 fps. So I splurged and bought one. $2700, with scope! A total waste of money! It made 46.6 fpe. FORTY SIX! I know a airgunner in Leetonia Ohio. He said he had a .30 cal Carnivore, used and tuned. Since I had al lot or .30 cal JSB's, I made a deal, a good deal. This rifle filled the void I wanted. My first shot I was convinced. It shot that JSB 44.75 955 and 86. Filled at 200 bar I run through two seven shot mags and it runs down to 140. I have my beast Recluse at the top, the Carnivore then my sweet Hatsan Neuron Star, also tuned, bringing up the rear. That joke FX? It sits all by itself in the closet. I'll sell for $1500.

I'm handicapped and this rifle is heavy. I took the stock off and even though it's plastic it weighed more than the rifle. I may look into doing some shaving. Maybe Hatsan can come up with a woody? The sidelever is a big improvement over that joke rear bolt. The open metal mags are a little tricky but I'll get used to them. Seven shots, the .357 holds 6, there's room for a larger mag.

There are rifles that make more power, are lighter but cost more. I like the traditional look. Metal, and wood. That's why I like my Recluse and Neutron Star. The Carnivore is plastic, but at least it has a stock! Son in laws Fx 3 looks like a buzz gun from a sci fi movie. Not for me. And I'm pretty sure my Neutron Star makes more power. 975 and 69.8 using a 34 grain FX? Recluse, 215 and 940 using g 146 grain. I like power, now I have it. Groundhogs are on alert!

Excellent precision, good for hunting up to medium size game. Not for Deer or big game hunting. Very well constructed and comfortable to shoot. Good magazine system and very nice good looking rifle.

Would like to have little more power for Deer and big game hunting.

Not for Deer or big game hunting.

Sean Sep 18, 2022

Im not sure what caliber you have. I have the .357 (which is legal to deer hunt with in my state) I took a 6 point with it at about 60 yards with a shot in the boiler room last year. He only ran about 10 yards and had a hole the size of a quarter in it.

Looks, style, metal magazines.

Different operating system for the magazines

I had to return 2 of these guns because the magazines would not turn correctly when cocking the gun, got another brand of 30cal instead

David Feb 03, 2024

The problem with the magazine jamming is easily avoided by just using something to push the pellet slightly deeper into the magazine. If it's just pushed in by finger, the pellets often back out. Even a slight push further in will hold the pellet in place securely.

Shannon Aug 29, 2023

Here’s the deal, the recoil of the gun shifts the pellets slightly in the mag and even a few thousandths of an inch can cause this to happen and it only takes a slight movement and the next round gets caught as it indexes. The only way to correct is to squeeze the skirt of the pellet just enough to provide some friction to keep them from moving. Don’t worry because when the pressure hits the skirt it opens back up when the air expands the pellet skirt against the rifling. It only takes a little press and take very little effort so Don’t Overdue It. It’s the only thing that corrects the issue that I know of and does not affect pellet flight whatsoever.

Matthew Mar 20, 2023

It is critical that nothing protrudes out of the mag. Pellets must be flush, front and back. I had the same issue with Polymags, took a nail clipper to the point, problem solved.

Edmon Mar 15, 2023

I am having the same problem with the magazines, I can't get through two or three shots without the gun jamming up.

Price weight and suppressed

If it didn't blow air out of the breach when you shot and accuracy could be a lot better. I tried multiple pellets and slugs best group I got was 26" at 25yrds. I'm no professional shooter but I known I can shoot better than that.

Typical Hatson so close to a great product but they cut corners where it really counts. All 3 guns I had did have bad barrels. 2 of the three were even bent!

Shannon Aug 29, 2023

This happened to me and I found that the barrel was tightened down and the Ports were not lined up. The barrel was set into the receiver and the ports were not lined up internally and only providing low power shots and air escaping out of the gun when firing. I could hear the air escaping around the barrel area. There are 2 screws holding the barrel and I loosened them and pulled the barrel straight out and could see that it was not aligned with the port of the barrel. Easy fix, just index it so they line up. There was 2 indentations for the screws to line up to and I lined them up and problem solved. You could see the marks on the barrel when the tightened the screws but did not line screws up with the indentations at the factory.

Samuel Aug 07, 2022

I'm having the same problem, I aim at my center target and hit at bottom 13 inches down and 20 inches to the left. I thought it was my scope, but I replaced with a different scope, same thing. This thing is shooting all over the place. I am not an expert shot but consider my self a sharpshooter. Gonna contact the factory. I didn't purchase from Pyramyd but the same problem existsm

Troy Aug 03, 2022

Had a Flash .22 like that, turns out they dorked the seals at the factory

David May 02, 2022

Wow, something seriously wrong with that gun. At 25 yards, I just keep hitting the exact same spot.

It's very accurate, powerful, and easy to shoot. I love the trigger on this rifle. I like the way it feels even if it is a long rifle.

Sell it with sights.

Don't buy huge pellets because they have to fit in the revolver.

I have the .357 shooting fx 82 grain pellets. Once you figure out how to hold this long gun it is capable of about 3/4 to 1 inch groups at 50 yards. I shot a hole through a 1x4 at 50 yards. Mine has side lever action and is not even a little stiff and cycles very smooth through the mag. Now for how quiet the gun is. I live on about 2 acres backed up to state land and my wife cant Hear me shoot it from in the house. It will smack the target and make a cracking noise. On here it says it is capable of 730 FPS with 95 fpe, not sure how correct that is cause on the hatsan website and the box it says 760fps with 105fpe.I would recommend this gun!

Besides maybe a little shorter, other then that nothing it is a hefty quality made gun.

The automatic safety has not worked on mine since brand new. I dont care Im not a fan of automatic safety I would rather place it in the safety position myself so I know it is fully engaged.

Sean Aug 27, 2022

Charles, mine is the .357 model as stated in beginning of review. David, pyramid air had it listed with automatic safety (where purchased) and yes in the owners manual it does state it is a manual safety. Either way it goes it is a great gun still to this day! It is my coyote gun!

Rich Jan 17, 2022

I think the 105 FPE is the .357 model, not the .30.

David Jan 16, 2022

The original Carnivore (and BT65 series in general) had bolt action and automatic safety. When they upgraded to the 2.0 version, they switched it to a sidelever, and made the safety manual, as customers had requested. The manual even specifies it is a manual safety.

Ordered the .30 cal 6/17/21. It just arrived at FedEx office for pick up today, 6/25/21. Initial inspection reveals item poorly packed for shipping. NO paper wadding in shipping box, to prevent "slide-hammer effect" during shipment. Factory box had what appeared to be a box cutter slice on one end corner. Inspection of actual rifle reveals ZERO pressure in air cylinder. Also numerous scratches here and there on the barrel shroud. Rifle came with 2 rotary mags. One of them was already seated in receiver block. That particular magazine had very pronounced tooling marks on the assembly screw head (common screw driver slot), like a person did not know how to use a screw driver properly. And didn't care about damaging the screw head. The rifle did cock easily with the side lever action. That is a big plus versus the super heavy bolt tension on previous generation of this BT big bore. I will add to this initial report when I get a chance to air it up and test fire with my new chrony.

Proper packaging by PA employees. At almost 10 pounds, sliding around inside the shipping box is not good. Paper wadding at both ends and on the sides would help prevent damage. Bubble wrap would be the best. Perhaps an option to pay extra for better packing for shipment?

Update coming soon on this Hatsan BT big bore qe sl .30 cal.

Edward Mar 20, 2024

You have it 3 stars but cried about it for months swore you wouldn't get another but then got like 5 more and you want anyone to take this drivel you call a review seriously? How many times did you divorce your wife and take her back after someone else broke her in ?

Shannon Aug 29, 2023

I’m confused here. So you sent back the first one and you were through with Hatsan and bought a Benjamin Bulldog instead? Then in 2022 you bought another Hatsan (although you said you were done with Hatsan) and this time it was new and great? So you’re basically saying it’s PA that’s the problem and not Hatsan? Don’t you think Hatsan deserves some good marks instead of 3 stars? Just saying the BT65 30 is better than that. Who knows what torture the 1st owner put the gun tbrough. It was probably disassembled by that person since there was screw damage. Factory guns use screwdrivers made for gun screws and they would not use anything but those. I don’t think it’s fair to downgrade the gun (downgrade the 1st owner, lol)

Dow Jan 18, 2022

Update to the update: Contacted hatsanairgunsusa with a couple questions. Hatsan does NOT send out any product unless NEW or refurbed. A refurb must look exactly like a NEW product. I just received my second bt65qesl big bore .30 cal. As last time, I bought new. But this time....I received a NEW air gun. Ordered Jan 15th, received today, Jan 18th. Not from PA....from a different vendor, for $387. Brand new, free shipping. As before, I carefully unpacked, (and took note of how it was packaged), my new airgun. This one, factory fresh, untouched(and unused), by anyone not from hatsan factory. Here is my conclusion: The bt65 big bore 30 that I received from PA, was most definitely, without a doubt, a USED airgun. Not just used, but used and abused by an idiot. That person put deep scratches and gouges all over the barrel shroud, air tube, receiver block, and one of the magazines. Not even repacked correctly. PA had to have gotten it as a return, then resold it as new. Pitiful. Unsat.

Tony Sep 03, 2021

Hey Dow, I'll be happy to take the tins off your hands. Ping me 210-589-5298

Dow Jul 03, 2021

Update 3 july 21.... Good news: no air leaks. Bad news: got RMA for return. Sent it back via fedex 29 june 21. Last straw was that the auto-safety did not function. So, did not fire a single shot from it. On 28 june, I did a very close inspection of box and rifle. Beat up factory box, deep scratches all over barrel shroud, 1 magazine tampered with, non-op auto safety. All this adds up to a used air rifle. No more Hatsan products for me. So I sent it back and promptly ordered a Benjamin bulldog. Now I am stuck with 6 tins of jsb .30 cal pellets.
