Things I Liked

This is my first gun from PA. My first spring gun from Winchester and my second Winchester to go with my pump 77. (1) It is light - feels like my 880. (2) It is quiet which is highly important in Suburbia. (3) Easy to cock (4) It has a metal trigger and crisp release. (5) 500 fps is enough zip for hunting.

Things I Would Have Changed

Nothing for this class of springer. I call it suburbia spring or sub spring. There is a break in period, so the barrell lock up gets smoother as you shoot more.

What Others Should Know

For ammo the Excite Spikes, Gamo magnums, and RWS pellets work best. Of course Crosman points and Destroyers are great. All right here at this site. Really the 500 Is not
finicky with ammo. I like RWS chamber oil for lube needs - for this Winchester and in my 77 pump. This is the best sub spring I have shot so far. Good accuracy up to 15 yards. Perfect for backyard. Loc-tite on screws seems best but check with Pyramyd staff on such issues.

Hello, I bought the Grizzly Razer brand at Princess Auto for $50, it is the exact same air rifle that is branded as the Winchester 500s. It is made by SPA from China. TSC want around $150 and Home Hardware want $260. Goes to show that just a specific name can demand more money. The air rifle is quite good, so for $50 instead of $150-$260 I did pretty good.

AMMO UPDATE: After trying many kinds, the pointed pellets made in China out perform. They say "Beeman" but are Chinese. They plug the breech snuggly - better than some twice the price - and group nicely, quick fire at 14yds. 8 out of 10 were covered by a $2 Looney coin.

FINAL THOUGHTS: After intense head to head with Explorer...the 500 has won out! The folks at Daisy should like to hear that the synthetic stock really is great and fits well. Also the Delta-like trigger does perform well. They say that the Explorer has a 2 stage...but it does not seem like it. The 500 is worth the extra $. One last funny remark: a young guy online had such bad neighbor issues - but still wanted to shoot - he bought a Grizzly and put a $60 scope on it. Uh...yeah...that won't work for me. The 500 is a powerhouse by comparison!

UPDATE: Got Explorer for a killer deal at $60 and out the door. For that price, I wanted to compare with the 500. The Ruger is made for little folks and turned out perfect fit for me. The Explorer has a smooth BB system for the barrel lock, and its sights are brighter fiber, tighter, and less bulky (more pin point). Having said that, the 500 has a hooded sight (protects fiber) and a two-inch longer barrel. Also, the 500 has a better trigger ( 2stage). The 500 is a remake of the Gamo Delta - which is fine. I liked the Delta in the '90s as did a friend I gave it to later. Both the Ruger and 500 have lock washers, but I found one defective on the 500, causing screw looseness, and replaced both. Finally I just said screw it and put Loctite on all the screws - especially the all important back screws on both guns (let sit for a day). I will switch off between guns as both will last longer. One major advantage the 500 has is no auto safety; just load and fire.
