When Friedrich Peyer im Hof, Heinrich Moser and Conrad Neher founded a wagon and rail-car manufacturing business in 1853 above the Rhine Falls in Switzerland, they had no idea they were laying the groundwork for one of the most revered brand names in small arms manufacturing the world would ever see. The quaintly named Swiss Wagon Factory began its legacy building the best and most sophisticated wagons and railway cars in the world. But that wasn't enough for the three ambitious owners of the company.
It started with a competition put forth by Switzerland's Federal Ministry of Defense. Their goal was to develop a rifle that was so revolutionary and well-made that the Swiss Army itself would adopt it.
And adopt it the government did. In 1864, the Swiss Wagon Factory received an order for 30,000 muzzleloading Prelaz-Burnand rifles. This is also when its founders changed the name of the company to the Swiss Industrial Company -- Schweizerische Industrie-Gesellschaft - or SIG for short. From there, SIG would grow exponentially, in terms of the numbers of firearms it was producing and supplying to government, law enforcement, sporting and commercial customers.
After World War II, they developed the SIG P49, which was the forerunner of the SIG P210. This would become the most storied gun on combat and in competition. Soon after the P210 evolved into the P220 which became the weapon of choice for the Siss police. This gun set the bar for reliability and features. It was widely regarded as the finest gun in the industry at the time.
In 1985, SIG became SIGARMS, Inc., which would remain its brand name for 22 years, until officially becoming SIG Sauer in 2007. In 2015 SIG expanded to include suppressors, optics, ammo and airguns.
