Learn more about the SIG Sauer x-Five ASP in Tom Gaylord's Airgun Academy Blog.

Sig Sauer continues to improve on the design of pellet pistols for some of their most celebrated firearms. As part of this new standard for CO2 air pistols, SIG Sauer has created a 20rd belt fed CO2 version of the 226 X-Five ASP Pistol.

The 20rd magazine is where the X-Five ASP really shines through. This design allows for 20 semi-auto shots be to be taken before reloading while other pellet pistols use small capacity rotary mags that must be reloaded after every 6-8 shots. Once you load up your magazine and the CO2, you can shoot your pellets downrange at speeds up to 430 fps to shred paper targets and blast down soda cans. While designed for pellet shooting, you can also load up BBs. For even faster-paced shooting sessions, you can further customize the gun with lasers or flashlights mounted to its Weaver/Picatinny accessory rail.

With this many shots, this pistol is great for hours of plinking fun and a welcome addition for owners of the real steel SIG 226. If you like CO2 replicas with more shooting and less reloading, this is the air pistol you've been waiting for!

Things I liked:

Great looks. Very detailed and authentic weight. I purchased this gun primarily because of the adjustable sights. The sights look and function very well. The CO2 loading system is a nice addition and is very easy to use.

Things I would have changed:

The trigger is the worst I have ever experienced in decades of hand-gunning. It is a two-stage process with the first stage used to rotate the belt magazine. This stage is predictable but very clunky. The second stage is very difficult to pull which results in poor accuracy. I bench tested this gun with 9 different high-quality pellets and could not get better than 2.5-3" groups at 21 feet. I think this is probably the result of the terrible trigger.

What others should know:

Make sure to apply non-petroleum lubrication to the magazines (silicone) and use a probe to seat each pellet in the magazine belt. A slick is felt when the pellet is properly seated. However, if seated too much, a jam will result. Both of these things seem to go a long way toward eliminating jams with the magazine. Jams also are caused when too many shots are attempted and the CO2 gas is low resulting in a pellet stuck in the barrel. I think the X5 is a nice pistol but wish it was more accurate. I own 5 centerfire Sigs and have come to expect a lot from this company. The X5 just did not deliver. It is probably OK for tin-can busting at close range where accuracy is less important.

Things I liked:

Adjustability and overall look of the sights. This is one of the main features that caused me to focus on the X5 over other Co2 pistols. I always want the point of impact to match my point of aim without having to employ Kentucky windage. The X5 provides this. The X5 has a unique way of allowing the Co2 cartridge to be installed that is much simpler than any other of the several pistols I own. The system is first-rate. I shot 5 magizines of RWS Hobby 7gr pellets at 7yds and constantly achieved 1.5-2" groups. I used this pellet because it has proven to be accurate in other Co2 guns I own and did not compare it to other pellet weights or manufactures' products. I thought this was very acceptable accuracy for a pistol of this type.

Things I would have changed:

I find the weight of the pistol to be rather heavy. I actually believe it may be heavier than an actual center-fire version. I own several full-sized, large-caliber pistols and think the X5 may well be heavier. The trigger feel is rather unusual at best and is definitely a two-stage operation. The first stage is used to ratchet a pellet from the belt-fed magazine into position for the next shot and has a long crunchy feeling to it. Once the mag. is positioned, the final let-off is predictable and fairly crisp. I found that I had easily mastered the trigger's feel after only firing a couple of magazines.

What others should know:

The magazine is an awkward thing to load, however, my experience with the mag. was simplified when I followed the suggestion of others to give the inside a good coat of oil and to use a suitable probe pusher to fully seat each pellet in the chain system. After doing these things I have not suffered any jams or stuck pellets which are things other X5 owners have complained about. Finally, I have used skateboard tape (just adhesive-backed sandpaper) on hanguns for years and found that adding a piece to the grip's backstrap greatly enhances the guns grip feel. My final comment is that this is a very interesting Co2 pistol and one that is a great deal of fun to shoot. I suggest that you purchase several additional magazines to be loaded at home before the shoot and have a wonderful day with it. It certainly has my recommendation.

  • Chad from USA asked:

My mag keeps jamming, should I use gun oil or another lubricant on the belt? Should I just reign for a different model? Got 3, one for me, my fiance do we can practice together and one for my son to be mother in law to teach her bc she wanted a real firearm. What's the best way to load from those who have had success? Thanks in advance!

    • Matt from USA asked:

I purchased 1 of these about 6 months ago (silver variant), was firing both daisy powerline premium and crossman CO2 cartiridges. When I started, I had left over Sig Sauer wadcutters from my P320 which I had a catastrophic issue with and replaced with the x5 and though I got the occasional jam, I liked the x5, the large 20 shot clip without the 8 round and flip I had with my now non functioning 226 (gave it to the ms. when I got P320, lesson learned lol) but I quickly ran out of those and I am not sure if the issue is the pellets as I have tried gamo wadcutters, precision crossman wadcutters and regular and every other round I have which is quite the variety, though all bought frmo Bass proshop, IF, and that is a big IF, I get 1 round down range, the X5 instantly jams, no matter what, usually requires a wooden skewer to push the round back into the clip from the business end to even eject the clip after. Unfortuntely, I moved and had to throw away my original box so returning to the mfg is out, I think, but has anyone else experienced this problem or know a solution? I do manage a shot off here and there so the internals seem to be ok, is it just the ammo? Do I need Sig specific as the other brands are too large?? ANY help is appreciated
