The Cinquedea [Ching-kwi-dey-uh] has held a long fascination for us here at Cold Steel. It gained popularity as the sidearm of choice for noblemen walking through the narrow alleyways and walled cities of Italy. A blade worn exclusively for civilian self-defense, it was essentially the precursor to the civilian side sword and the rapier and yet, this instrument of personal protection seems to have owed much of its design to fashion as it did to the cut and thrust of mortal combat! Surviving examples of these unusual short handled and steeply tapered blades are often highly embellished and ornate. With etched or gilded blades and deep multiple fullers that border on jewelry rather than weaponry but beneath the romanticisms of high renaissance fashion lay a tool made with purpose. A wide, stiff cut and thrust blade that could be brought into play in confined spaces, and deliver a mortal wound! Our interpretation of the Cinquedea is made from expertly heat treated 1055 Carbon steel with a highly engraved guard and pommel, and a hand-carved rosewood grip. The Cinquedea is sold complete with a leather scabbard with engraved steel throat and chape.

I love the overall shape, size, sharpness and style of this, it is awesome. That being said I don't think the metal has been treated for corrosion resistance. I got it and 4 days later after taking it out it started to rust just make sure to oil it and keep it covered

So cool it’s a very interesting design can’t tell if it’s a sword or a dagger but I love it
This blade came with a sharp edge, preserved in plenty of packing grease. It is lightweight, swift, and compact. The oblong handle helps with edge alignment. It is capable of fast, precise cuts. I was able to slice into a gallon water jug three or four times in thin sections - something much more difficult to do with a longer blade. The blade cuts and thrusts very well, to the point of nearly no resistance. My only gripes: the handle is dyed/coated in some sort of stuff which will stain your hands black. I used 90% rubbing alcohol and paper towels to remove the majority of it, but I still get staining, especially with sweat or moisture. The studs on the grip help to secure the blade in your grip, but can be uncomfortable in a bare hand. If it weren’t for the grip dye, this would be a five star rating.
The edge is sharper than a razor, incredible balance on it but still with a nice amount of weight, beautiful fullers and handle design, and just a pretty sight in general

An excellent example of how weapons were a reflection of the culture that produces them. Beautiful but extremely deadly. You can easily see the advantages of such a weapon in the crowded streets and narrow alleys of a Late Medieval city like Vienna. The Cold Steel version solid as a rock with superior craftsmanship, as are all their products that I've had the pleasure to own and re-sell at Renaissance Fairs over the years.

If you want a really unique sword that is historical then this thing is right up that alley. When I saw it on “ Forged in Fire “ I really wanted one but it took me several years to finally spring for it. Cold Steel had a 25%off special so I jumped. No regrets, it is a pretty sharp and very well made. The scabbard is also very nice. Get it you won’t regret it.
