9 of 9 Umarex Targis Hunter Max Reviews
Good knockdown power, solid stock, fairly accurate.
Things I Would Have ChangedCocking effort is a little higher than expected. It's not bad for most, but if you are buying for a youth or a smaller shooter, then they might have an issue. I didn't have great luck with the scope. Others said it was good, I ended up trashing it and I just shoot this open sights now, which works a lot better for me.
What Others Should KnowOverall, this is a solid break barrel. It was the first air rifle I ever bought and it was a great entry level piece to get into the sport.
The synthetic stock is very durable and the Ruger branding is a really cool touch.
If you're looking for a solid plinker or rabbit gun to keep in the truck this is a good way to go.
Overall I liked everything about the gun.
What Others Should KnowOut of the box I was able to get pretty good accuracy. I think I could anything I was shooting at.
This rifle gave me a much better impression in person than browsing online. Build quality, balance, and handling are much higher than I expected at this price point which feel more comparable to a $300-$500 rifle. The included Iron sights with easy to align fiber optics are a huge plus. They are well built with mostly metal parts with no feel of cheapness at this price level. I am particularly fond of the stock with dense rubber inlays in the forearm and grip that feel fantastic to the hands. Impressively so. The integrated picatinny rail is slick. There is no hollowness to the stock and it does not feel cheap, contrary to any assumptions. Balance and weight really stand out, both are excellent. It's a rifle I don't want to put down. When you factor in its adjustable trigger, excellent power, silenced quiet shooting, included sling and tasteful dual red Ruger logos, you just have to be impressed for the price. Oh yeah, a very nice entry level scope is included.
Things I Would Have ChangedAt this price point it would be very difficult to ask for more than you are already getting. Perhaps an adjustable comb in the stock would be nice on future additions.
What Others Should KnowWhen my friend brought his Ruger Targis to my house, I didn't know what to expect. After about five minutes of holding it, asking questions about it's features etc. I was sold and promptly went and bought one. I had just purchased a Benjamin Marauder and NP XL 1500, so I was not necessarily looking for another rifle. It impressed me so much I realized I could definitely find a niche for this in my lineup. The price may have you second guessing, but give one a chance. Like I said, its much more impressive in person. Umarex have represented Ruger here proudly. I have a customized 6.5 Creedmoor Ruger Predator as well, and the value proposition of the Targis is in line with genuine Ruger products. Ruger pack a punch for the money, and this rifle is no exception.
Not sure why this rifle didn't come up in some of the searches I did on this site, but maybe the I.T. dept. can work on that. Until my friend brought it over, I didn't even know it existed.
Very well built rifle. Shoots accurately at 50 yards.
Things I Would Have ChangedNothing
What Others Should KnowGreat gun for the money. I have two Ruger's and love them both.
Super sleek/tactical design. Ruger emblem is awesome. Great scope. Picatinny rail. Powerful and accurate.
Things I Would Have ChangedNot much. Some people might not like how loud it is. It's got a nice crack to it so it's not super backyard friendly.
What Others Should KnowSolid break barrel for a decent price. I use it for squirrels and rabbit and target shooting. Great gun if you're new to airguns or looking for a solid break barrel to use for small game hunting.
Nice solid, well built air gun. Sights are very good and easy to see. Was spot on out of the box. The trigger is good but not great. Sling was nice but I took it off since got in the way of cocking it sometimes. Deadly on small critters. I've put down 174 squirrels alone in the 2.5 yrs I've had this gun. Can routinely put ten shots in a 2 inch circle at 35 yards sitting in a swivel rocker on my patio resting gun on my leg using the lighter pellets. I tried some heavier pellets and the drop at all ranges was significant. Love the stock and it's firm to cock but not too bad for the power you get. Deadly on squirrels inside of 25yds but have a few kills in the 65 yd range. Fairly quiet for the power.
Things I Would Have ChangedScope is crap, fell apart after 5-700 rounds. Bought a good one from Pyramid and I've easily put another 6000 rounds through the gun with no problems. It is a little on the heavy side but not a problem since the vast majority of my shooting is from my patio.
What Others Should KnowMy gun is still going strong after all of the rounds I've put through it. My only issue is now it's starting to give me some resistance/grinding feel when cocking. Problem seems to come and go so makes me feel it's on it's last legs, just a matter of time before if finally fails but I've gotten my money's worth with the heavy use it's had.
This gun comes with the best included scope of any gun/scope combo I've tried. The scope is branded "Ruger"...but I'd like to know who makes it....good scope. I also appreciate the automatic safety. I also appreciate the weight/heft of this rifle.....although the comb need to be MUCH higher for a traditional "cheek" rest when shooting. And.....that's where the "Things I like" end.
Things I Would Have Changed-Horribly dirty out of the box, with loose bolts. -I found the sights unusable, and every time I'd just about get them dialed in, the shock of firing would cause the rear site elevation to move. -A plastic scope mount/rail??? Really!? I mounted a UTG 3-9x40mm on this gun. When I was tightening down the scope mounts, I broke 2 of the plastic "tabs" off the rail! This forced me the reposition the scope forward, making the eye relief way out for me. -The Trigger.....OMG! It has literally the worst trigger of ANY firearm I have ever fired. It's stated the trigger is "adjustable"....no, it IS NOT! The adjustment screw is similar to a wood screw thread, and is all the way in as it comes out of the box....so no room for adjustment. -The words I will use to describe the trigger...... Gritty, Rough, and HARD...... I didn't not measure is, but I suspect the trigger pull is at least 10lb.....it was literally difficult to pull the trigger after about 20 rounds. -Accuracy: It SUCKS!
What Others Should KnowThere are so many things "wrong" with this gun, I have no idea how they can price it at nearly $300! I have a Gamo Swarm Whisper, that I purchased new for $149.97, and it is better in EVERY way when compared to the Targis.
This was the third Umerax made gun I've tried, and the third one that has been a complete dud! Time for me to go another direction.... I had considered going into PCPs and was looking at the Gauntlet..... but based on my experiences with other Umerax guns, I doubt I'd go that way.....just no confidence in the brand now.
Plenty of power, accurate and attractive appearance. The fixed sites are bold and accurate. It's a break barrel .22 and it works honestly as simple as that sounds, that's enough of a good thing to get a high rating from me. If 5 stars is reserved for the one and only best break barrel then this is a solid 4. Prefer PCP but these are so fun and easy to use, it still gets a lot of use.
Things I Would Have ChangedPlastic "suppressor" on the end seems sturdy enough, but it is plastic. Like most airguns, I think it was tested with lighter alloy pellets, and I suspect I'm getting closer to 800fps (not a big deal) I have the Gamo Hunter Extreme in a .22 it for sure gets right at 1,000 with a lead pellet (Advertised as 1300) and there is a noticeable difference in power. 800 is still really good, but something to be aware of if you insist on 1,000 fps out of a typical pellet.
What Others Should KnowMine seemed to WEIRDLY like the H&N barracuda greens the best for power. The H&N punched a hole in the stainless steel sheet I was shooting. The only other pellet to do this was a gamo rocket, even the H&N hornet only dented it. Both the Barracuda green, and the copper barracuda power pellets had a little more snug fit, and I suspect was able to build power by creating a better seal. Jsb exact best for accuracy.
