ARKANSAS TOOTHPICK
The main competition to the Bowie knife from the late 1830's to the period just after the Civil War was the Arkansas Toothpick. The Arkansas Toothpick got its namesake as an ironic reference to the coarse, rough and tumble culture that populated the lowlands of Arkansas and the Mississippi delta in the mid 19th century. Travelling journalists from Europe often made up stories about how they commonly saw men and old boys picking their teeth with giant knives that they dubbed Arkansas Toothpicks. Like the Bowie it was frequently a large knife almost always double edged with a sharp acute point. The knife almost always had a double quillon guard and many were fancy and some imitated the Bowies of the day in size and appearance. Sure, some were plain, but most were elaborately decorated. Our version has a substantial double edge spear point blade, with a Malaysian Sal wood handle and a fancy pommel with an alligator motif. The scabbard is equally stunning, it's finely made and decoratively enhanced to complement the handle.

Love the the blade and the scabbard. To be perfect I would change the belt loop to sit hight and add a leather strap to hold the blade in place. Like those in the old gun holsters

I'm a first time buyer to Cold Steel and always wanted a version of this knife as it's appearance and interesting name always intrigued me. It had been sold out for a while so was very happy when it was finally back in stock and was able to order it. Upon opening the box, which was well packed, the first big disappointment I saw was the black Cold Steel tag attached to it which said "INDIA" on it. I was assuming for the price and their reputation that the knife would be made here in the US. When I viewed this style knife on other online sellers many seem to be of foreign manufacture, India, Pakistan etc., so I was hoping this one wouldn't be. The other issue I found was with the attached leather belt loop holder. There's a rivet at the point where the knife is inserted into the sheath which wasn't really ground down and smoothed off properly so the knife handle would tend to catch it and rub over it whenever it was removed or inserted. I've since taken this belt loop holder off but it did unfortunately end up scrapping one side of the handle. Overall I like the knife very much but waited to purchase this style of knife from Cold Steel because I was expecting a U.S. made product of superior quality to ones I would find at other retail sellers. I'm not sure at this point if it would have made any difference.

I wish I could get that I did like and post and share that

Outstanding recreation of an American dirk. I've seen tinatypes of civil war soldiers with these. This one would fit right in that era.

I absolutely love this thing. Windlass did an amazing job making this for CS. The grind is flawless. I'm glad they designed it with a bit of BELLY to the edges instead of triangular- great example of how CS takes historical designs and makes them perfectly relevant for modern use - would make a fine pig sticker or hunter's sidearm.

Nice blade however it scratches going in and out of the sheath. My blade now has horizontal scratches all over it and is simply not as impressive as it was when I first purchased.

Well-made sharp knife. I do wish that it had been made in the USA though.

The best arkansas toothpick available on the market

It's a functional knife, but finish and leather work don't really stack up. With "forged in fire" creating a resurgence of blacksmith knife makers in garages across the country, Etsy is showcasing some high-end talent better than cold steel within the same price point. I was expecting some better quality fit/finish/looks than the typical "overseas" less quality, more profit corporation narrative

A nice addition to the Bowie collection. Better in person than in pictures. Clean lines, sharp, beautiful sheath and hardware. Balance just forward of guard very lively for such a large blade!
