By the mid-1600's dueling was at the height of its popularity. In fact, this trend for settling affairs of honor with steel reached such heights that King Louis XIII of France outlawed dueling for fear of losing too many of his important dignitaries to this dangerous pursuit! Aristocratic noblemen saw it as their manly duty to defend their honor at sword-point, and as such began not only seeking out the knowledge and training imparted by specialist sword masters, but also exploring new types of weapons to help them gain a decisive edge. One particular sword began to gain popularity - a smaller, lighter and faster version of the Rapier that was easier to carry and quicker in combat. A precursor to what would eventually become the Small Sword referred to by many simply as the "transitional rapier"in. Cold Steel's interpretation of this blade (which we have named the Cavalier Rapier) features a sharp double edged and needle tipped blade which is decidedly shorter and lighter than a classic Rapier, allowing for much more speed and agility. With a tempered steel pierced shell guard, rings, quillons and knuckle bow it offers astonishingly good hand protection, while its wire wrapped grip and counter balancing pommel give great comfort and liveliness in-hand. Provided complete with a hand-stitched leather sheath with steel throat, chape and integral belt hook for ease of carry.

I have had this sword for about a year. It is cosmetically superb. The balance is very good. It is sharp! The only flaw is inadequate space between the guard and the quillions. It will only admit the index finger. I prefer to have the index and long fingers in that space for greater control and precision. A piece of leather backing up the guard would also be usefull.
the sword looks lovely ,is well balanced, it is not sharp but is a good thruster.The blade has flex but not to much over all good
I do like this Pappenheimer Rapier. It's weight is good, Shell Guard is excellent, thrusts well and is overly well made for a 36" length blade. However, the bevel angle is not at a good angle . This is why it's not that sharp on the edges. It thrusts really well .It just doesn't cut well or maintain an edge. The scabbard is a bit flimsy. I sheathed it and it pierced the scabbard easily. I had to put tape on it. Maybe Cold Steel should reinforce the scabbard like their Colichemarde Smallsword. As with all their daggers and swords no frog or baldric is offered. Cold Steel should make a MK II option. Fix the bevel angle on the blade and make a better scabbard. The Rapier is a Cut and Thrust sword after all. If it was a thrust only sword then it's an Estoc. First off, very well made piece, everything is solidly constructed and looks amazing. However, the description claimed it to have a sharp double edge, and rapiers or this type should have sharp double edges, but the edges have a very steep bevel at the very end of what is a false bevel, like you'd see on a mall katana edge. It cannot cut anything, and I really don't know why its advertised as having a sharp edge when it doesn't. Can pierce great, and is well made, just don't expect it to cut.
