10 of 15 Air Arms S500 XS Xtra FAC Walnut Reviews
Beautiful, accurate gun.
Things I Would Have ChangedFill valve.
What Others Should KnowYou can't go wrong buying this gun.
Outstanding fit and finish, because it's a S500 single pellet load, the scope can be mounted lower than on the S510 magazine version, the proprietary Air Arms fill valve is unusual but works well with the supplied fill fitting, the walnut stock may be somewhat heavier than the ambidextrous beech stock, but my example was beautifully figured, the side lever load is a great improvement over the earlier bolt load as used on my S410, the new type power dial with click stops also an improvement...all in all a beautiful gun: I'm very happy with it!
Things I Would Have ChangedThe laser cut stock checkering is somewhat "busy" and I prefer the classic checkering on my older S410. The trigger safety is problematic. I replaced mine with a Rowan match trigger...
What Others Should KnowI chose the S5** over the HW100, the only comparable PCP in my estimation. The Air Arms is a more attractive gun, I think.
Came very well packaged. Overall fit and finish is superb and it looks exactly like the online illustration. The blueing reminds me of what Smith&Wesson used in the old days. I have several Wellrauchs and used to think they had the best trigger. Today I think the AA may have an edge. You can load a pellet from either side, with the generous opening, even though the stock is designed for a right handed shooter. The side cocking lever is a joy to use. The owners manual is one of the best I've seen so far What else can I say?
Things I Would Have ChangedNothing.
What Others Should KnowThis rifle is not as quiet as the Marauder I have, but really not bad. Be sure to clean the barrel before use as mentioned in the manual. The accuracy is so good it deserves a decent scope. I'm a nut on cleaning pellets, weighing for consistency, and a light lube for absolutely the best accuracy.
I got excellent advice from my friends and Greg at Air Arms.
Things I Would Have ChangedI would change nothing. I made an excellent decision to purchase this fine rifle for my purpose of target shooting at our indoor range of 31 yards. There may be a few varmints pursued, also.
What Others Should KnowThe changing of air pressure on the side of the rifle is very touchy, and there isn't a dial with "hash marks" to help the making of the adjustment needed.
It's looks. The accuracy. The trigger. The quality.
Things I Would Have ChangedNothing.
What Others Should KnowThis rifle is awesome. It is everything I hoped it would be. No regrets at all.
Outstanding quality, walnut stock is second to none. Accuracy is unparelled. None better in my opinion. That's why I bought the gun.
Things I Would Have ChangedNothing
What Others Should KnowPurchased in Mar 2015 and returned in Jun 2015 because of failure. Returned to PyramidAir under warranty. PA replaced/repaired gun in record time.
This rifle has a great balance. I bought the walnut stock and could not have asked for a better piece of wood. The blueing is of the highest quality. It shoots all jsb pellets great, 18.1 being my favorite. It also shoots the 13.4 great too, wind will move these more though. I can shoot wine corks at 75 yds repeatedly with thw 18 grain jsb pellets. This is a great rifle and I doubt you will be able to find anything better out of the box at any price.
Things I Would Have ChangedHmmm, I will have to get back to you on that when I find something!
What Others Should KnowI went with the single shot s500. I just think there is less to have problems with that way. Seems like most people want the repeater, guess that is your choice. If you want the very best buy this rifle, accuracy is unbeatable.
The walnut stock is absolutely stunning! Mine is nice and dark with light tiger stripes at one angle and light with dark stripes from another angle. With a fine satin-like surfaced. It seems pride in your work is becoming rare these days. I consider it a privilege to own something of such high quality. I need no adjustments for pellet path out to 50 yards with a medium mount Hawke HD 2-7x 32mm. The cheek weld is perfect for this setup. I was not satisfied with a high mounted larger scope, plus the gun was excessivey heavy. BTW the 7.55 lb. spec. is correct, I weighed it. The thin reticle on the crystal clear Hawke makes more magnification completely unnecessary for a 50 yard gun. I can hit sparrows past 50 yards I just can't see the pellet. If you routinely take shots past 50 yds. You may need more magnification to keep the mil dots closer together. Some people dial their velocities down below 900 fps.to get tight groups this thing shoots heavy pellets at 1000 fps. like a laser.
Things I Would Have ChangedNothing, except maybe the fill port. It works just fine though after you get used to it. Some have commented that the gun is not quiet. I feel this is somewhat overstated. The gun doesn't sound like a toy, but is not loud either. The odd thing is birds and rabbits act like they don't even hear it sometimes. Target shooting over rabbits, they don't even stop chewing. I have made multiple kills on sparrows in a single bush. (should have gotten the repeater) Some reviewers have negatively commented on the trigger mounted safety. The safety works just dandy in practice and I actually like it quite a lot. Last night I woke up in a cold sweat because I dreamed Air Arms wanted their rifle back because this one was earmarked for the Air Arms museum. (Not really, but I expect this to happen any day). There a lot of attractive rifles out there but Air Arms has set the bar so high with this one that I imagine I would just be disappointed if I bought another. Dang you Air Arms!
What Others Should KnowI had a lead fouling problem and was initially disappointed with the accuracy. I could also see my pellets curving to the right. Sent it back under warranty and the tech from Air Venturi ran a brass brush through it (four single strokes)and sent it back with a test card with a .38" 10 shots at 42 yards that included one flyer! (cheap 10.5 gr. ultramags at 1005 fps) He seemed very impressed with this as was I (He called me on the phone before sending the rifle back.) I tested the rifle on return just before dark and it was produced small groups. The next day however in bright sun I could see the pellets curving to the right. I had ordered a new barrel so I saw no harm in a careful but deliberate scrubbing with JB bore paste. Now 8.4 gr.JSB, 10.5 gr. CPH, and 10.34 gr. JSB heavies have the same POI at 50 yds. (they did not before) with the JSB heavies being the best at (1/2" @ 50 yds. all day long with a 7x scope.) Now pellet path is dead stable and never a flyer. Mine is S500 .177
the walnut stock is excellent. the blueing is deep and dark.
Things I Would Have Changedthe optional of adding a multi-shot tray.
What Others Should Knowwith the single shot you have the convenice to load any length pellet. the power is right were it needs to be for .22 cal.

Great attention to detail, fit and finish. Workmanship superlative. Haven't had it long enough to really consider the other features, but Im sure owning other Air Arms guns that it will be a great addition to my shooting cycle and collection.
Things I Would Have ChangedI suppose this is out of the hand of the manufacture of this fine rifle but the main complaint is air leaks. Im waiting and watching to see what this does. As it has loss air sitting. I understand things need to adjust in a new PCP. EVERYTHING ELSE IS PERFECT.
What Others Should KnowTop of the heap for fit , finish and accuracy, a truly beautiful air rifle.
