10 of 16 Crosman .177 Cal Steel Breech Reviews
The sight is the main reason to upgrade, I purchased it with the gun so it was already install when I got it, what else can I say steel or plastic with a sight that's not dove tailed and isn't easy to adjust, you choose.
Things I Would Have ChangedThe sight wouldn't adjust down enough to get centered at 25 to 30 feet the distance I am shooting indoors with 5 pumps. It shoots about 1-1/2" high at the lowest setting. (fixed see my review on the gun)
What Others Should KnowWhen I first sighted it in I noticed that the bolt handle was angled to the rear. I have the 22 version as well so I thought the angle may have been changed on newer models. On closer inspection the bolt handle was cross threaded into the bolt. I thought I might have to send it back but it turned out that I was able to dress the threads and correctly install the handle.
I've always liked my Crosman 177 pistol. I use it for plinking and getting rid of critters who like our garden as much as we do. Wasn't sure if the steel breech would make much difference and not sure it does. The new sight that comes with the kit is fantastic. Much better sight picture. Fully adjustable!
Things I Would Have ChangedInstructions aren't the best. I got a better set from Crosman. It tells you to loosen the barrel screw to lift the barrel up and out. My model doesn't have a barrel screw.
What Others Should KnowKind of tricky re-installing the valve (don't remember the part name) but when it goes in it works great. I love the gun!
Great upgrade for a 1377, allows for a good rear sight instead of the cheap factory one. Had a problem with the first order, the package had been opened and there was nothing inside. Pyramid Air sent the order again. Awesome customer service!
Things I Would Have ChangedI had to tap the bolt for the handle installation so some QC is in order, otherwise simple.
What Others Should KnowMy 1377 was from the early 1980's and upgrade works great.
This steel breech kit is everybit the quality as shown in the image on the Pymamyd Air site product page. Machining and bluing is top quality and includes an 11 mm dovetail on top for scope mounting which beats the Crosman intermounts by a good mile and a half. Also the vertical mounted set screw on top of the breech locks the barrel into alignment with the breech for a much more precise fit. This kit in combination with a new barrel seasoned by cleaning as described in the Airgun Academy videos, episodes 31 and 32 give me 1 inch groups at 15 yards. Not bad for a pistol.
Things I Would Have ChangedThe dovetail in this breech is a bit wide as noted by other reviews that I have read, but not a major problem. I placed a shim between the front edge of the LVA sight and the front surface of the breech dovetail. In my case, the shim thickness is .013", so I bought an inexpensive set of feeler gages at a local hardware store (under $5.00) and cut a piece from the thickness size I needed. The sight slid into place with a nice snug fit, and when I tightened the two set screws, the sight did not lift but stayed perfectly in place. The supplied LVA sight is really nice but a bit steep at approx. $50.00.
What Others Should KnowThe front sight blade on the Crosman 1377 and 1322 series pistols could be a bit higher in order to maintain rear sight elevation adjustments in the middle of the adjustment range. There are remedies for this also.
The individual components are well made and the technique, instructions and tools for changing out the receiver were fine.
Things I Would Have ChangedThe interface of the LPA sight and the receiver was not well thought out and needs to be redesigned, Three screws are used tighten down and adjust the sight on the receiver. However, in doing so, you wind up lifting base of the sight off the receiver platform. The only interface is now the bottom edges of the sight dovetail with the top edges of the receiver dovetail. I had no confidence in that arrangement what so ever. I finally just glued the sight to the receive. Of course the end result of that is I have no elevation adjustment capability.
What Others Should KnowDon't buy it if you're really looking for a fully adjustable sight.
Quality steel construction, look and function of the LPA rear sight on the steel breech 1377. The LPA is a huge improvement over the stock sight. The look, feel and weight of the steel breech on the 1377 make it rock solid with the option of optical sights. It now feels and looks more like a firearm. The steel breech helps reduce the slight barrel movement with the plastic breech. I would have given 5 stars overall except for need to alter front sight.
Things I Would Have ChangedThe fit into the dovetail should be tighter and the sight should sit lower in the slot. The stock front sight on both of my 1377s was to low and had to be raised to allow for adjustment low enough to get on target. Nothing to change about the breech.
What Others Should KnowIf you run out of downward elevation adjustment, your best bet is to raise the top of front sight. It's easy to do, costs little or nothing and takes just little time and creativity.Read my comment on this review page if you want to see how I fixed mine.I know you shouldn't have to but if you like the sight and breech combo it's worth it.
This increased the velocity of my 1377 with H&N Trophy copper-coated 8.80 grain pellets. The stock breech would barely sink the pellet into my plywood backstop or sometimes bounce off at 20 yards. With this installed it buries the pellet in the plywood anywhere from up to the middle or base of the skirt.
Things I Would Have ChangedI'm not so sure about the white dots on the sights. I'm thinking about blacking them out to provide better contrast. It'd be nice if they had a precision factory peep site made to these same dimensions, and not bulky like the Williams one. I wish there was a quality precision front sight besides the junky plastic stock one.
Adds more heft to the rear of the pistol. It allowed me to mount the higher quality LPA rear sight. I can also add a scope or red-dot sight if I choose to do so. The breech kit and sight were easy to install.
Things I Would Have ChangedEnsure that the rear receiver screw that came with the kit is threaded properly. See below.
What Others Should KnowI would have given the breech kit 5 stars except for a problem threading in the rear screw. The slightly shorter rear screw that came with the breech kit would not thread into the rear receiver. The threads on the screw eventually stripped out. To overcome the problem, I sawed the existing slightly longer screw off to the required length and used it instead with no further problems.
Adds weight to the pellet pistol and adds lots of good quality, transforming the pistol from average to high quality.
Things I Would Have Changednothing
What Others Should KnowI own seven of these pistols now, five in .177, and two in .22. I have gone to the expense and trouble of putting this breech kit on all of them, and certainly do not regret it. They transform the pistol completely into a different and better product.

Look and feel much improved over plastic version. Positive click adjustments on upgrade sight. 3/8" dovetail for future optical upgrades. Factory (well, Pyramid) installation is seamless. Pyramid sends the stock parts that were changed out without being asked.
Things I Would Have ChangedBolt Handle constantly unscrews under normal use. Torquing it (5-6 ft-lbs; it's only a small diameter thread) didn't help. Loctite, maybe? I hope the threads don't tear out! The upgraded bolt handle is heavier than the stock version. This makes the bolt tend to move forward and get in the way of loading if you have the muzzle pointed even a little down. Could Pyramid maybe install the stock bolt handle on the upgrade breech during the changeout process? Included MIM sight does not lower enough to put Point Of Impact on Point Of Aim?!? Mine hits about 1.5" high at 7 meters, with the rear sight bottomed out. White dots on rear MIM sight makes for a poor sight picture under indoor conditions. (5 seconds with a Sharpie marker fixes that, though)
What Others Should KnowWhat others have said about loading difficulties is true. A little dexterity and some practice are needed to get around the issue.
My method:
Point muzzle slightly up with bolt open. (so gravity keeps bolt open)
Drop pellet into rear of loading groove.
Slide pellet against bolt nose if needed.
Gently holding pellet against bolt with finger, point the muzzle vertically down.
Release pellet to drop into breech. The bolt will follow under gravity influence.
Ensure bolt is locked; pistol is ready to fire.
(You can retract the bolt to verify correct orientation of the pellet, but i rarely (never?) find problems if I wait until the pistol was fully vertical to release.)
