Description
With over 100 years in the airgun industry, Weihrauch certainly knows how to create an amazing breakbarrel air rifle.
The HW98 is a gun destined for backyard greatness in target shooting and small game hunting. This air rifle builds on Weihrauch’s long experience by keeping the ambidextrous stocks while adding an adjustable buttplate which cants left to right as well as moves up and down, along with an adjustable cheekpiece set into its unique beech wood frame, accented by black stippling along the forend and grip.
Like other airguns by Weihrauch, the HW98 contains the famed Rekord trigger, a crisp, clean, 2-stage adjustable that’s been called on of the best spring gun triggers in the world. While there are no open sights, the 98 includes an 11mm dovetail which begs for a high powered scope. If you can’t tell by now, this is not your average breakbarrel!
With this combination of quality design, comfortable hold and prized features--make the HW98 your own!

The look is cool
Things I Would Have ChangedScrews loosen way too often Not reliable or accurate Cheek rest is not flush
What Others Should Knowtight trigger
I bought the refurbished model and it was a steal at that price.
Things I Would Have ChangedA rail for a sling.
What Others Should KnowThe refurbished model was MINT like New In The Box!!!!!!
The HW98 is my first Weihrauch air rifle. The fit, finish, and overall quality of this rifle is simply outstanding. The blueing is perfect as is the wood and finish. The adjustable cheekpiece and buttpad allow you a custom fit and work well. The cheekpiece has a number penciled-in underneath which means it's not a mismatched hunk of wood from somewhere else. A nice detail. Being winter, I haven't been able to sit down and do a proper sight-in on paper, but I do have the scope (3x9 Bug Buster) roughed in and I'm hitting the paddles of my old Gamo pellet trap at 25 yards offhand every time with Beeman 1245 .22 pellets. Cocking effort is light and smooth, and the Rekord trigger unadjusted is crisp and consistent. The firing cycle is very smooth no doubt due in part to the extra weight of the heavy barrel. The inevitable twang you get with any springer is there, but it's muted and barely noticeable. Audible report is very, very quiet. The stippling affords a sure grip, and looks great.
Things I Would Have ChangedNot a thing, other than having Spring come quicker so I can give the rifle a proper sight-in, test, and workout.
What Others Should KnowThe HW98 is relatively expensive, but in my opinion it's worth every penny. This is a beautifully built and finished rifle that exudes absolute quality in every aspect. Despite my limited shooting opportunities due to weather, the rounds I have put through the gun so far give every indication that this one fine shooter.
The rifle is my last HW98 to complete the chronological order of HW98s I bought before, first the .20, then the .25, then the .177, and NOW the .22 HW98 from Pyramid Air. The style of the rifle with the power plant is absolutely sufficient for the pellet the HW98 can shoot which is the equivalent power plant of the famous R9 and HW version as the HW95. There is no reason to get a higher powered spring air plant because the HW80 and R1 have too much for repeated control in offhand shooting. It is much easier to use the HW98 in offhand shooting where the stock can be fitted to your offhand shooting position to your desire. The lighter HW95L or HW95 will not do in constant repeated offhand firing of a spring air rifle to make adequate accuracy or groups. The HW98 WILL make offhand shooting of the spring air rifle customized with little adjustment with the scope you use or the mounts. I like the fact Pyramid Air is selling HW98s when all other places are not, anymore. The HW98 is it.
Things I Would Have ChangedOn the HW98 you CAN change the position of your hold by adjusting the moveable stock. You cannot change anything about any other air rifle with the ease the HW98 offers. I would not change a thing on any caliber of HW98! I now have all four calibers and these HW98s give me true performance and constant consistency over all weather conditions.
What Others Should KnowI'm a springer fan and biased against CO2 and pneumatic pump and PCP.
The HW98 gives the shooter the best consistency with the least amount of "effort" shot to shot. No chamber pressure gauge, no CO2, no pumping. Just break the barrel, cock, and take off the safety before each reliable shot. All mistakes are made by the shooter and not the HW98.
I purchased this HW .22 great rifle. It has some vibration and buzz out of the box. I put a JM tuning kit in and it will put pellet on on pellet. This is a precision fine quality rifle.
Things I Would Have ChangedI wish Weihrauch would deburr the inside of the rifle.
What Others Should KnowI have tuned rifle and this one will give my tuned guns a run for their money. Great rifle!
HELLO FELLOW AIRGUNNERS, I PURCHASED THIS HW98 IN .22 CAL. FROM PYRAMYDAIR (VERY NICE FOLKS AT PYRAMYD). LET ME TELL YOU FOLKS! WHEN IT COMES TO PRECISION, BEST HIGH QUALITY THROUGHOUT, SPRING PISTON AIR RIFLES - THIS MODEL HAS GOT TO BE AT THE VERY TOP OF THE LIST OF FINE AIRGUNS. I MEAN EVERYTHING FROM THE STOCK, THE METAL, THE TRIGGER ( AND WHAT A FINE PIECE OF MACHINERY THAT TRIGGER IS) MINE BREAKS AT ABOUT 1.4LBS. OF COURSE THE ACTION OF BREAKING THE BARREL TO SHOULDERING AND THEN PULLING THE TRIGGER IS ALL SUPERB! NO QUESTION ABOUT IT FOLKS THIS IS THE BEST OF THE BEST. RECENTLY, I WAS OUT SHOOTING AT ABOUT 25 YARDS - THE 10 SHOT GROUP MEASURED .35"! THAT'S DAMN NEAR SAME HOLE OVER AND OVER AGAIN.
Things I Would Have ChangedI GUESS I WOULD LIKE TO SEE A LOWER PRICE TAG - SINCE I AM IN THE MARKET FOR A .177 VERSION. BUT YOU KNOW WHAT THEY SAY ABOUT QUALITY " YOU GET WHAT YOU PAY FOR" AND WITH THIS HW98 YOU GET EVERYTHING I MEAN DOWN TO THE LAST DETAIL. IT IS DEFINITELY AN HEIRLOOM RIFLE MEANT TO BE PASSED DOWN FROM GENERATION TO GENERATION.
What Others Should KnowIF YOU DECIDE TO GET ONE OF THESE FINE PRECISION GEMS OF AN AIR RIFLE YOU SHOULD GET A RELIABLE GOOD QUALITY SCOPE - LIKE THE HAWKE LINE. ALSO, OPT FOR THE (10 FOR 10 SHOT) QUALITY CONTROL CHECK BEFORE YOU CHECK OUT.
GREAT!!! GREAT!!! GREAT!!!!!!!!
Things I Would Have ChangedNADA!!
What Others Should KnowTAKE CARE OF IT - IT'S AN HIERLOOM - WILL LAST GENERATIONS IF KEPT CLEAN AND FREE OF DAMAGE
I purchased a .22 version on a refurbished about 7 months ago. I love Weihrauch and Dianwerks. This rifle is one you can carry all day. I've hunted and foot stalked rabbits on my ranch. I run the 14.3gr hp, or JSB 25gr for 15-20 yard shots with 3 mil dots holdunder. It is so smooth and quiet that you can get 2nd, and 3rd shots if you miss your prey. I run a Hawke optic on this rifle with the Sports Match rings. This rifle would be a nice size for a youth or adult. You could shoot field and target competition it's so good. Weihrauch used star screws on the pivot at the break barrel. Very helpful in keeping it tight and smooth. Wonderful rifle to own.
Things I Would Have ChangedOffer in .20cal please. My butt pad screws loosened. The previous owner must have over tightened. I fixed the issue by taking cedar splinters and inserting three in each hole, then tighten. Allen screws will bite splinters, and secure the buttplate. Then reinstall buttpad. This fix will work on similar issues. I would love to see the barreled action on a walnut stock, like the HW35E. Swing swivels would be nice for tree hunters. Not in love with the grip tape texture over diamond checkering even if it's laser cut nowadays. I still love the darn thing. I'm just older and oogle sexy air rifles with great styling.
What Others Should KnowIt's expensive, but it's worth every penny down the line. It is super accurate, and if you tweak the trigger down to an even lighter pull, you notice your groups look even better. It shoulders the easiest of all of my Weihrauchs. HW35E, HW97K, HW90.
It is deceptively quiet. You may think it's slow. Watch out. I popped a rabbit near the feed barrel. The round exited the rabbit, went through the feed barrel, and through the feed scoop. It's not a super powerhouse, but it is powerful. I've hit rabbits, and they do a full flip forward in the air after impact. I think any varmint hunter will be pleasantly surprised by this one for the smaller game. Also, this would make a great survival rifle. You wouldn't give away your position, and two rabbits, a couple of doves sure beats survival package meals.
Everything!!! No doubt about it! I have found the eureka of all Springer Airguns. Mine's a .22 I've had it for about a year. And let me tell you folks this is it !! Fit and finish is bar- none and that's not saying it all ... this air rifle puts the rest of the field to shame. The engineering and manufacturing is simply genius - it feels so solid in your hands you feel like it was designed specifically for you. It shoulders so well and the added( blued) steel shroud over the barrel adds that extra strength and ( so solid feel, there's no better feel) I'm convinced this airgun is what all springers should be judged by. it's so perfect from head to toe there is nothing that can be improved. Just cycling the rifle from cocking to squeezing off the trigger... and the trigger, what can I say, SO Smooth and beautifully crisp, and the recoil is amazingly short and concise and virtually no vibration felt, so all of your shots stay on target after the shot.
Things I Would Have ChangedAbsolutely nothing.... it's perfect just the way it is!
What Others Should KnowThis rifle is so sweet, super accurate [ same hole - 5 shot groups at 10 m, half inch at 30 meters.] And should, ( seriously) be considered as a family heirloom to be handed down for generations to come. Final word - if you purchase one of these gems you'll be happy & satisfied beyond your expectations. At the moment I'm saving my pennies for the .177 version And I know I won't be disappointed- it's that good my friends! Happy bullseye

Looks great and very powerful it eat up my 1 inch wooden makeshift target, had to double up on the wood. I decided to buy the 22 cal metal target trap. Nice trigger adjustment. WONDERFUL CUSTOMER SERVICE.
Things I Would Have ChangedBolts will loosen up and fall out of the gun, I had 3 so far, some blue threadlocker should solve this minor problem. AFTER 50 DAYS OF OWNERSHIP AND UNDER A 100 SHOTS I NOTICE IN BACK OF THE TRIGGER GUARD WHERE 2 CRACKS OVER 4" LONG TRAVELING THOUGHT THE STOCK.I PURCHASED THE REFILE ON 1-4-24 AND WAS OUT OF THE 30 DAY WARRANTY REPLACEMENT. I HAD TO BUY A CASE JUST TO SHIP IT TO AIR VENTURI FOR REPAIR OR REPLACEMENT. THIS RIFLE IS CURRENTLY OUT OF STOCK. AT THIS POINT I JUST WANT A REFUND. I AM OUT POCKET $750.00. THIS RIFLE WAS ADVERTISED AS THE GOLD STANDARD.
What Others Should KnowPyramyd had never heard of this problem unless the rifle was dropped.
The wood I my rifle was in mint condition when is was delivered to me.
If I get a refund I will buy another rifle but not a break barrel.
Sincerely,
William Burrows
