The most accurate BB gun in the world! That's what Daisy claims. And, it's true!
Daisy's Match Grade Avanti Champion 499 is for shooters 10 years and older who want to learn the basics of shooting. This spring-powered single-shot is the "Official Shooting Education BB Gun by Daisy." In fact, the Jaycees use this rifle to train young shooters. Millions of firearm and airgun shooters have used the Champion 499 to learn gun safety and proper gun handling This rifle is so accurate, that even seasoned shooters cannot shoot beyond its potential.
The all wood stock has a Monte Carlo cheekpiece, and the lever-action cocking mechanism is easy to use. The hooded front sight and the Daisy 5899 rear peep sight help shooters quickly acquire the target. The gun is a muzzleloader, and the BB is held in place by a magnetic retainer. The rifle is intended for use at 5 meters (16.40 feet).
Steel BBs can ricochet. The shooter and everyone in the shooting area should wear safety glasses when a gun is being handled (even if it's unloaded). Remember to remove all pets from the area, as rebounding ammo can hit them, too. Never shoot steel BBs at hard objects (including metal targets) or water, as that increases the chance of ricochet.

Things I liked: Easy cocking, target style sights, with interchangeable inserts for the front sight..
Things I would have changed: Fit and finish could be better. Front sight seems a bit cheesy but adequate. Rear sight is adequate but not very precise. One of the worst triggers on any of Daisy's other "Match Grade" rifles. Quality control could be better.
What others should know: I gave the 499B a 3 star overall rating of good as it is very accurate for a BB gun. I gave it one star as for the money the fit and finish is about on a par with the Standard Red Ryder which can often be purchased at some retailers for 1/6 the price and shipped for free. It has one of the worst triggers on any of Daisy's other "Match Grade" rifles and in my opinion worse than my current production Red Ryder. My example had to be returned as it shot 1/2 inch low with the sight maxed out. If you need to return it, be sure to get Daisy to provide the proper shipping label and have the RMS number clearly marked on the package.
Things I liked: Great rifle for its intended purpose. Have several hundred rounds through it. Very accurate at 36 ft that I shoot. Still waiting on back ordered Avanti bb s that should be even more accurate. Out of the box the trigger was a little over 4 lbs. Not bad at all but I prefer a lighter trigger. A little grinding and polishing and got it down to just over 2 lbs.
Things I would have changed: The lever is very small. I had to put my hand over it to shoot comfortably. Ordered two replacements from Daisy for $3 each plus shipping. Modified them to make a larger loop. Much more comfortable to shoot now. The first attempt wasnt quite big enough. Got it right on second attempt.
What others should know: The peep sight adjustments take a lot of clicks to move the line of sight. Much more adjusting needed compared to other sights.
Things I liked: Accurate little shooter. Even out to 10 meters. You will need at least 6 inches of holdover though. Can not wait to get my hands on the Precision BBs and see how they do.
Things I would have changed: Make the lever a little bigger. The current one is not a dealbreaker though. I had to grab the whole lever to shoot comfortably.
What others should know: It is a fun gun for us big kids too!

Is there no magazine for ammo or must I load 1 BB for each shot?
The model 499 is a single shot loader.
Is this just a " dressed up" 1938 Red Ryder, or does it have any signifigent performance enhancements beyond the stock and sights?
The barrel is different and it's a single shot muzzle loader as opposed to a repeater. The guns are very different. You might want to check out the Airgun Academy blog, there have been a number of entries about this gun
To clean the barrel, do you unscrew the barrel tube from the gun?
