The most accurate BB gun in the world! That's what Daisy claims. And, it's true!
Daisy's Match Grade Avanti Champion 499 is for shooters 10 years and older who want to learn the basics of shooting. This spring-powered single-shot is the "Official Shooting Education BB Gun by Daisy." In fact, the Jaycees use this rifle to train young shooters. Millions of firearm and airgun shooters have used the Champion 499 to learn gun safety and proper gun handling This rifle is so accurate, that even seasoned shooters cannot shoot beyond its potential.
The all wood stock has a Monte Carlo cheekpiece, and the lever-action cocking mechanism is easy to use. The hooded front sight and the Daisy 5899 rear peep sight help shooters quickly acquire the target. The gun is a muzzleloader, and the BB is held in place by a magnetic retainer. The rifle is intended for use at 5 meters (16.40 feet).
Steel BBs can ricochet. The shooter and everyone in the shooting area should wear safety glasses when a gun is being handled (even if it's unloaded). Remember to remove all pets from the area, as rebounding ammo can hit them, too. Never shoot steel BBs at hard objects (including metal targets) or water, as that increases the chance of ricochet.

Things I liked: Well made and solid. Feels like the Daisy guns I grew up with. The sight is well made and does the job. It is pricey but what quality item isn't these days. I bought it for close in shooting in the backyard.
Things I would have changed: The bb tends to roll out of the muzzle if you do not hold the gun level or with the muzzle tilted up. This makes for a problem if your shooting from a higher position to a lower one. You cannot do that. Your shooting position must be level with the target area or lower.
Things I liked: The stock has a 13 1/2 " pull and fits my 83 year old body. The cocking is vary light and the trigger is easy to get used to with its long 1 st. stage and light 2 nd. stage pull. With the scope I mounted it stacks BBs on top of each other at 20 ft.
Things I would have changed: Maybe make mounting a scope an option.
What others should know: Expect to have a lot of fun if you buy this gun. I mounted a 4x15 scope on mine.
Things I liked: I like the stock, it's simple and well made, nice thick wood. The accuracy is just as advertised. At first the peep sight seemed to be difficult to use, but I looked on the internet and found out how to use a peep sight correctly and now I can see the front sight AND the target so clearly, I can hardly believe it! I bought this for a Christmas present to myself. Sorta of a "you'll shoot your eye out" kind of sentiment. So easy to cock, easy to load, and just the right weight. I think it looks great as well.
Things I would have changed: Not anything needs changing as it is perfect for the 5 meter range it is designed for. I would like it if the sight could be made so that I could sight it in for 25' or 30'. I like the challenge of a longer distance. The currend sight does not allow enough travel to sight in at much more than 16'.
What others should know: I love to listen to the precision BB's roll down the barrel and click onto the magnet. With the really good precision BB's it can take almost 4 seconds for the BB to roll down the 12" barrel, incredible! Overall this is a super fun gun. I have the classic model 25 pump, and have shot it for years. The 499B is a different experience, and well worth it!

Is this just a " dressed up" 1938 Red Ryder, or does it have any signifigent performance enhancements beyond the stock and sights?
The barrel is different and it's a single shot muzzle loader as opposed to a repeater. The guns are very different. You might want to check out the Airgun Academy blog, there have been a number of entries about this gun
To clean the barrel, do you unscrew the barrel tube from the gun?
too bad it is single shot. Is there such thing as an accurate BB break barrel or under lever repeater?
That depends on your definition of accurate.
